How happy would you be if we kept most of the first team?

Players like Wilson and Allen have arguably earned the right to keep the shirt. McNally, Doyle, Panzo, JWE could all be back in one form or another. It’s possible we’ll just need a striker and a RWB in and can keep hold of Hamer.

Obviously the likes of Kelly, Walker, Maguire, etc will need to be replaced as squad players.

This team has shown top six form for the majority of the season and would only do better with the likes of Palmer and O’Hare added in and McNally and Wilson all season.

Or would losing Vik be such a blow that we’d need to upgrade across the board to compensate?

Ultimately you have to keep improving just to stand still. What Robins has done this season is miraculous given the lack of investment on the pitch but I wouldn’t count on it being repeated. There are too many question marks and/or aging players at key positions for me.

To be honest, the only reason I ever supported selling Vik was to reinvest in a squad that I didn’t think had any hope of promotion - turns out I was wrong there. If we’re going to sell him and then not reinvest the money on new players, then there’s even an argument for keeping him and spinning the wheel on another playoff push.

We would need

GK
RWB
LWB
3 CB
CM
CAM
2 ST (Viks off)

10 in for me

Rose
Kelly
Dabo
Maguire
Waghorn
Walker
Dacosta
Bapaga
Reid

All surplus for me if we want to assemble a proper top 6 squad

Try and find anyone to take Moore and Cashman off our hands, loan out on a 6 month deal Burroughs, Howley, Rus, Tavares and see how they get on in Lower league football

I'd want better first choice WBs both sides. We won't keep Vik so we'd need two good strikers. Need 1 x CB to replace Rose. Midfield is fine.

Even if say we signed Panzo and McNally and got JWE back in on loan?

I want our WBs to be outstanding. We rely on them so much. Bidwell is fine. I'd want someone better than JWE and BNC even though both have looked decent. If we had both season long I'd be happy enough but I don't want to rely on loans in both WB positions if we don't have to.

Im not convinced by BNC, but I think JWE has done OK for his first stint in first team football and could be the type to kick on in his second season.

Exits:
- Moore
- Dabo
- Kane
- Dacosta
- BNC
- Rose
- Panzo
- McNally
- Doyle
- JWE
- Kelly
- Hamer: on current form and due to his contract situation he'll almost certainly go if the latter doesn't change.
- Hilssner (already gone but his wages will be available)
- Walker
- Waghorn
- Gyokeres

That would mean at the bare minimum we'd need:

1x GK
2x RWB
4x CB
1x LWB
1x CM
2x ST

So say this was the squad:

Wilson/Young GK to challenge
Fadz/McNally/Panzo/Rose/Young CB to take over from Fadz
New RWB/Burroughs
JWE/Bidwell
Hamer/New CM
Sheaf/Eccles
O’Hare/Palmer/Allen/Howley
Marquee ST signing/Young ST (loan?)/Godden

That’s signing McNally, Panzo, a RWB and a ST for the first team plus JWE on loan. And GK, CB, CM, ST as squad players who can challenge a couple could be loans. I reckon that’s about the minimum you could get away with.

Out: Moore, Dabo, Kane, Reid, Doyle, BNC, Dacosta, Kelly, Walker, Waghorn, Vik, Tavares, Maguire

Perm: McNally, Panzo, GK, CB, RWB, ST
Loan: JWE, CM, ST

Could easily see that costing us £10m in fees. McNally £2m Panzo £1.5m, £2-3M on a ST, £2m on a RWB, and a million or so each on GK, CB, ST.

Any back three that sees Panzo and Rose getting a decent share of playing time is going to struggle, as we’ve seen ourselves this season.

I'd doubt we'd sign Panzo permanently. Forest would want somewhat of a return on the £1.5M they bought him for.

Unless the deal was right I'd personally steer clear - especially given how many players are needed to be brought in and the level of cost that is likely going to come to.

Its trade offs isn’t it? I suspect Panzo might stick around even if just because of the Viveash factor and it’s better the devil you know. We like to work with players and clearly see something in him even if he isn’t at the Doyle level. Rose is just cheap backup you hope you don’t use.

If we don't get promoted, I can see us losing both Gyokeres and Hamer.
Not based on anything but just think we'll get offers on both players that the club won't be able to refuse.

Of the current out of contracts and loans, I'd try and renew:
- McNally
- Panzo - Doyle would be a better option, but imagine it's unlikely and Panzo has looked good in games this season
- Dabo - as a backup RWB
- Walker (Unpopular opinion I'd imagine. He's almost definitely gone anyway and don't think he'd even want to renew, but if we were to lose Gyokeres and he can get regular game time, I'd give him another year)

Really hard to judge what state the championship is going to be in next year. Hopefully a few that come down continue to be basketcases but it does look like a strong line up to me. Next season could be trickier prospect so we will need to kick on I recon.

Coming in will be 3 from:

West Ham
Leicester
Leeds
Everton
Forest
Southampton

and Plymouth, Ipswich + 1 from:

Sheff Wed
Bolton
Derby
Barnsley
Peterborough

I would be delighted if we could convince Hamer and O'hare to sign new deals. I'm fully expecting Gyok to go for a big fee, just feel like even if we do go up he'll be off. I would be disapointed if we didn't strengthen the squad depth. there were patches this season where it took us a while to workout how to play without key players so it would be nice to have some proper back up.

Defence at the mon is a worry seeing as 4 of the current line up arent ours. I'd try and get as many of the current loans back as I could. Maybe a cheeky perminant deal for McNally and BNC

I'd too keep Walker personally if he wanted to stay, what's the point in spending a signing on fee or transfer fee on a replacement Championship level striker if he's not guaranteed game time anyway

I very much doubt he'll want to stay. Robins clearly has very little faith in him.

That’s why I’d get a loan in as well as a big money signing (for us) and use Godden as third choice.

In all seriousness it's strength in depth and owning our own players we need to improve on, so that means keeping the players we have assuming they want to stay, anyway.

Will be quite a lot of overhaul no matter what division we’re in next season. Can’t imagine how much we’d have to spend if we did go up.

Recruit good leaders, have a strong spine and find two players who'll get 10+ goals and you'll probably be close. Basically, don't do what Forest and Fulham did a few years ago.

Why would we want to sign Panzo or Wilson Esbrand? They'll both be at league 1 teams on loan next year.
