I'll go out on a limb and say that if we get very near to or over 400 then we'll win the match and retain the ashes.

These two have doubled the score between them. Who saw that coming??

No-one past those two players I would guess.

Bairstow looks much better playing alongside batsmen. When he was with the tail he looked jumpy and he's much more settled at 6. Ali can give it a thrash at 7 with the tail.

Bizarre decision to switch in the first place!

Looks like it was an inspired move to get him to 6 but should have been that way anyway. Shame we didn't have another hour as we were very settled. We cannot lose silly early wickets tomorrow with a fresh bowling attack so we need to dig in over the first 5-10 overs and settle the play again like they did today. Happy with today, I think after a shaky start we won the day... the battle for middle earth begins.

Much better day England, Stoneman and Mawan look decent, Stoneman needs to work on playing the short stuff or ducking it. Mawan looks a gutsy bugger, who is prepared to fight.

Think tomorrow morning could go either way. You would hope England can build on their score and go past 400. However, a couple of quick wickets and I wouldn't be surprised if we were all out for 370.

It's still a new ball and the Aussies were so hostile this morning. Going to need to be on our mettle.

For me Bairstow needs to push on and get a century now and Mo needs to hit at least a half when he comes in. Even if Malan didn't add many more that gets us up near 400. If neither of those things happen I'd be nervous (unless Malan ends up with a double century of course...). Overton and Broad can bat a bit on their day but I wouldn't want to be relying on them to get us to a decent score, especially with the short stuff coming down.

I'd be happy with Bairstow and Malan getting another 80 or 90 between them and then Ali thrashing the bowling for an hour tomorrow. have a go at the Aussies with the new ball after tea as it seemed to do a little bit later on in the day and hope that Broad doesn't have to bat otherwise things could get messy (ie his whites).

A good solid first session tomorrow should set this up nicely. And then push hard to tea. If we can then get a couple or three Aussie wkts in the final session we just might be able to claw 1 back.

They’ve only won there once ever and that against a second x1!

For me we need to get to circa 500 to have a chance of winning

My concern is it's a quick wicket but perfect for batting, we can rack up 500 but if fear they'll get 600 with our attack without any out and our pace or swing!

You'd hope Woakes can hit 90 and others 85+ but we lack that 'at their throat' bowler!

Broad can get a lot of bounce, but I'm not sure this is the wicket for him and he lacks the pace of the Aussie attack.

Broads due his one in ten in innings spell of bowling that he produces, over the next 4 aus would be the ideal time!

Decent first day, need to build on it and not fold this morning.

Western Australia scored 514/7 batting first here a month ago and still lost by 5 wickets!

That’s why it made me chuckle, I like pointless stats like that. It’s akin to City having a 100% home record in Europe...

And that’s Malan gone for 140, trying to loft Lyon back over his head. Thick outside edge to be caught at point. Great catch tbf!

6 wickets down for 35 runs. There's the collapse right there. 403 all out.

Yep. This continues and they are going to surpass our total and then some.

Pitch looks tame compared to what we had to face. It's that lack of pace.

Both gone, thank me for that!

Great review! Just looked out guessing the umpire thought there was an edge onto pad.

Get Smith early and it's game on!

Still think we were 100 runs short this morning. Hoping Ali and Woakes would have chipped in at least 40: each. Need to bowl full at Smith, he is eating these short balls up
