Should never have given the Captaincy to Root, its turned him from an exciting reliable talent to a hopeless failure.

They never learn.

Agree it’s kind of like giving it to a striker in football. Let them concentrate on what they are good at, attacking!

This is so frustrating. Why didn't they bowl like this in the first innings. Even if we skittle them out for 150 you've got to think that's too much for a run chase.

That's devastating, Smith for a duck would have been amazing :banghead:

England at Cardiff springs to mind.

Better session shame it's all too late in this test!

Even if our attack did it’s job, out batting is so poor we have no chance. Bad decision to bat I think though

Anything over a 300 lead and it's game over I think.

All too little too late. 268 lead isn't it? I think we might have had a little bit of chance chasing 300 and under, but anything more than that and I really don't think we have any hope.

Of course Australia now only need 33 to get past 300.

Think even if we have an excellent day tomorrow morning the Aussies are still likely to be 350-370 ahead.

Too much to chase.

Although they will win Australia should have enforced the follow on as they had a chance to get at England again under the lights and I think they would have won by an innings

Agree. Certainly would have taken a couple of wickets before the close.

Agree...I think it’s a poor tactical decision by the Aussies. Has released the pressure on our batsman for a couple sessions at least. Also although they are still favourites to win they have opened the possibility of a draw. All depends when the Aussies feel they can declare without the possibility of England chasing them down.

They are are 268 ahead at the moment, so I would guess at 272.

Right decision not enforce the follow on, rest them up bat England out the game and skittle us out for under 200.

They would have to declare at some point tomorrow to give us a total to chase or leave it too late and risk the draw.

Hmm, do disagree unfortunately.

In theory it may have been correct, but now England have taken 4 wickets, Australia now can't come out and flail the bat and score quick runs. Think they will now have to tread carefully and consolidate. They can't afford to lose 2 or 3 more quick wickets.

If they had made England follow on we would have surely been a couple of wickets down at least by the end of play.

With 268 runs in the bank, I think Australia can flail the bat if they choose to, knowing it's unlikely that this England side have either the technique or application to score 300+ runs in the 4th innings. Ànd for that blame too many players schooled in 20/20 and one day cricket rather than the longer form of the game.

I don't think they will flail the bat though. If they got to say 55 for 6 panic would set in.

They will consolidate, for the first hour at least anyway I would have thought.

I notice that Michael Clarke, who hardly ever enforced the follow on when he was captain, has said that Smith should have forced England to follow on as we were beaten and on the floor.

I get that, but say England bat for 70 over 2nd inns you've flogged your bowlers for 150 overs straight, they'll get a full days rest (potentially) and be fired up to go again with England probably chasing 400 knowing they're not going to get it.

I think they're in such a comfortable position they could afford to rest them up. If today was the 4th day then you'd have had no option but to go again.

I think there was a degree of arrogance in the decision. I think they went out to embarrass us a little more and give the public something to watch for 5 days. If we batted again, it would have been all, over in 4 days, this way it drops to day 5

Handscomb given out and nothing to prove clearly that the decision was wrong and thy overturn it? DRS not been used correctly by the umpires.

91/7 and a lead of just 305.

Still think it's too much though, but good effort from England.

9 wickets down, but the lead now over 350. Already about 80 runs too many.

If we had to chase down 270 we might have had a chance, but 350? Next to no chance I think and I we will now surely fall well short.

So...

Aussies all out for 138 -

Yay, brilliant!

England need 354 -

Errmmm, no chance.
