Yeah, I know this can wind some people up.
However, after my old dog died three or so years ago, having not done a shred of damage to my immaculate lawn in his life, we got another dog (a couple of years later).
And this one's a bitch (apparently their urine is rather different from a dog's, and can kill grass). Oh yes, I can confirm that! After six months there was more dead grass than alive.
I did my best, scraping off the dead grass and soil, and re-soiling and seeding (with supposedly urine resistant grass). Utter waste of time, money, and energy.
Now, with the wet weather and her propensity to run around like a nutcase, the whole lawn is but a bog (it doesn't drain terribly well either, which doesn't help).
I'm proper fed up with it, to the point of seriously considering artificial grass.
As I said, I realise this divides opinion - and until a year ago I was a Real Grass Only evangelist - but I'd love to hear what others have done in similar situations, and how artificial grass has, or hasn't, worked for you.

(Yes, I fully understand the environmental impact, and no, I don't like that, but I'm kinda at my wits end. In mitigation I'd certainly keep a decent amount of soil beds and borders, plum trees, shrubs, bamboo hedge, the existing sleeper planting boxes, and the fair-sized pond).

I had artificial grass and had 2 very big dogs at the time. It does prevent mud and losing grass but when it's hot it really stinks of piss.

No matter how much cleaning, what stuff we tried on it to keep it clean and smelling fresh it just stunk as soon as the sun was on it.

This was fitted over 10 years ago now so I'm not too sure what the newer stuff is like.

Have moved since and have read you can get things to put in the dogs water bowl to stop it from killing the grass (it might take the smell away?) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dog-Rocks-Urine-Patch-Preventer/dp/B01NCMB59J?th=1

I was also very opposed to artificial grass, but our new place has it installed in the garden and it's great, especially for a dog - not sure if yours is a puppy, but ours would be digging it up into pieces. Worst she can do with the artificial grass is rip up the carpet, which just has to be nailed down again.

I was worried about the smell too, but we just get it professionally cleaned every couple of months and there's no problem with it. All in all it's a lot less maintenance.

I was wondering about the smell issue.
So I tried an experiment by blocking off her access to the lawn and getting a piece of AG to put on the patio and training her to use that. It didn't seem to be an issue tbf, although it's obviously not a real-world test.
I've had a quote from a guy here in Hinckley to do the job, and he would use what he describes as 'pet-friendly' carpet laid on granite dust. Allegedly it has the effect of fairly quickly wicking the pish away, and as the whole area is on a slight slope it would drain fairly well. (The whole street is built on a thick layer of solid clay btw, so I'm assuming the combination of that and granite dust above it would help. Or I might just be being naive).
The sample looked pretty decent quality, and he did my daughter's back lawn with it a couple of years back, and there seems to be no problem with her dog - albeit only a short-arse pug. Ours is a three-year old Cyprus rescue German Shepherd/Segugio Italiano cross, and therefore a lot bigger, but probably no more 'productive'.

You can get a food adative to stop dogs urine from killing the lawn and smelling so bad.

Apparently it's harmless and perfectly safe to use, although I've never tried it myself, but that's mainly because I'm not a dog!

Yes, I've looked into that, but my missus isn't keen to go that way. And it's her dog - her rules.

That's bloody typical of women, they have a problem and want a solution, you give them a perfectly good solution, maybe it's the only solution, but no, that's not good enough for them!!!!

Honestly you can't please some women.
