Premier League star on seeing pal stabbed in face over a five-a-side match

I didn't realise Woodlands school was that bad?

Fair play for his charity work and that he is grounded!

On one side it had eastern green and mount nod, C1-type sleepy suburbia; on the other it had canley and tile hill, which can be a bit tasty. The school was always a difficult mix of the two populations.

With this and Callum Wilson talking about cov recently either things have got a lot worse recently or I lived a very sheltered life! It wasn’t this bad in the 80’s & 90’s was it?!

No it wasn’t that bad. Race wars in cov is laughable. I think there’s some artistic licence in that story.
I know Wilson had a hard upbringing and was in and out of care

Definitely wasn't that bad in the 90's. A lot of my friends lived around those areas and apart from the odd fight not much happened. I happily walked around the areas even in the dark and walked 2-3 miles to and from school everyday without incident. School was pretty multi-cultural too and don't recall people being picked on cos of race, although being white maybe I just didn't notice it. Quite a few of the popular kids were from asian or african backgrounds. Far more likely macho testoterone bullshit picking on the less self-confident lads regardless of colour/religion etc. but other than that nothing bad. Heard of one or two occasions where there were rumours someone had brought a knife in but never actually saw any weapons at all.

Maybe it depends on who you hung around with and he just had shit friends?

Tends to go in cycles so called tough areas and usually it’s a small group of arses causing problems. I’m a born and bred Wood Ender and in years gone by you had to walk close to the wall in places, miles better now.

Sorry the article is utter bollocks. Coventry has never had a BNP councillor. I think it might have had a candidate or two but they've never been elected.

Biggest load of shite I've heard.

Woodlands was never that bad. Schools across England are far worse now with knife crime.

Who has said Cyrus hasn't had race issues?

What we're saying is Eastern Green isn't a BNP voting area and Woodlands hadn't had knife crime.

To be fair CC4L I know it must seem condescending to hear white people saying there isn't an issue but I think pusbccfc is right, I don't think Eastern green is a hotbed of racial violence or any type of violence.

Think things were different for his dad and his uncles back in the day.

That's not to say I don't believe that he experienced problems but just feel they may have been exaggerated for the purpose of the article.. You may tell me I'm wrong any I'll respect that.

I went to Sidney Stronger for 2 years in the seventies.
It was classed as the worst school then even I saw no weapons, and fights were even a rarity.

Yeah, this is spot on for me.

I'm not saying for one minute there weren't or aren't racial problems in Coventry.

I'm saying the article is written in a way that undermines the school and the area in a way that is slightly exaggerated.

I witnessed more bullying and aggression from black kids when I was at school in the 90s than I did white kids, if anything, as a well brought up young lad, it was always black lads you feared the most.

I saw loads of fights, none were based on skin colour or drugs or anything like that.

    It's not exactly South Africa.

I was at school in the 90s though so just before him I'd guess.

Jesus, he makes it sound like the ghetto. I went to Woodlands and other than the occasional fight it really wasn't that bad.

In the mid to late sixties the catholic schools were mainly Irish background kids and through my senior school years that continued to the mid seventies and going to college.
The CoE schools nearby had an influx of different races in the early seventies and that was interesting getting to and from school and at the youth club.
That said I look back and think it was inevitable there would be friction but it was fists not weapons.
That's my biggest issue with the idiots these days; having a fight means you get bruised but stabbing means you risk a life. Is it worth destroying the lives of two people and two families for something that doesn't mean anything in a few days?

I went to woodlands. Looked at our old class photo a couple of years ago with a mate who was in my class (I’m 40).

Out of the 31 kids, 4 were expelled (one for having a tug in assembly all over someone else’s blazer ! 2 for bullying and 1 for drugs.

At least 2 have passed away, we think maybe another has as well.

I really didn’t enjoy it as a kid, but prob no worse than many other schools

Cov was rough in the early 90s, when I went to uni I lived in hillfields for a bit which was rough! its different when you live with family in suburbs in areas your familiar with and grow up in.
Prostitution/drugs/ and car crime was massive from what I witnessed. City centre has cleaned up immeasurably since those days. which you are talking 25 years ago.

The Asian society used to give us a list of PUBS not to go to. There was always trouble if Students went out on Friday or Saturday night mixing with locals, Got dozens of stories I could share! but suffice to say the students learnt very early (don't f with the locals) and stick to midweek student nights!

I remember some students in the colly once. One was jumping up and down on the spot saying he was a cage fighter and he was going to mess people up.

It was the funniest thing I think I've ever seen with something like that.

Shadow boxing and warming up in the zone and just got put on his arse.

Like you say, it depends on the area, who you hang around with and how you behave. If you walk around any area like you are carrying surfboards then you probably will end up in trouble.

Lived in Hillfields. Mixed race. Went to Barr’s Hill.

I can’t comment directly on what has been said as I didn’t go to woodlands. But I saw and experienced all of the above. Albeit 10 years earlier. Sorry lads.

Looking back it sounds way worse than it actually was at the time though. For example another school turning up on Radford Road with knives and machetes was laughed off in double maths right after.

I remember getting called a “Bunch of fucking monkey bastards” by a teacher at a school in Longford after we lost a football match too. This would have been about 1998.

    “Did he just say that?”
    “Think so”
    “What did you say?”
    “Nothing”

    The end.
