I cant believe Rugby isn't in the top 6 spector sports ?

That's a surprise. I assumed it would be number 2 in Cov

What other 5 sports in cov are getting 10k+ every 2 weeks or so ?

That's the thing...participation in swimming once week includes those that take the kids 'swimming' but ultimately muck around for 3/4hr then do two lengths & get out. Better than nothing - but not going to impact majorly on fitness/health/sporting prowess. Like athletics...they're including joggers there I suspect - 2million of us jog for 20mins when it's not raining - that's not athletics.
Can't understand though why motor racing isn't included because most of the driving population seem to think they're in some kind of race!

Why would a football fan and apparent anti Wasp bod go on the Wasp wiki page ? Ain't you got any gardening to do.

Why would a football fan comment on a rugby thread ? Shouldn't you be at home baking?

And so we go on...

Maybe linked with the company being formally moved to the Ricoh?

Well there are exceptions .

Of course we all dislike lots of things. I guess the difference is that we don't put any energy into telling everyone that we dislike Britain's Got Talent - it becomes invisible to us, rather than consuming us. Passionate dislike is really a very negative emotion and cannot be good for the holder's happiness. My advice would be to let it go - live and let live.

Ooooh handbags!
I still don't really see the point. If you are arguing against a 'city of rugby' then the attendance stats are the argument. Participation stats may be part of the strategy but they are no threat to us are they? Unless we are also worried about becoming a city of swimming?

Why is it not enough to just like something without feeling compulsion to dislike things other people like?

LOL, no compulsion, I was thinking it was an indirect strategic approach to an issue causing a problem to something I like.

Why would anyone want to get involved with CCC? Why should the council have the right to play God with our club? We all know that Sisu were their preferred bidder and look how that turned out.

I guess I'm in the minority but I actually like 'the City of....' Idea. It should be 'sport' though. Unfortunately they have gone down the Rugby route but if that gets more kids playing sport it's cant be a bad thing. That's the most important thing after all.

With regards to Wasps they aren't actually that bothered about it. No disadvantage to them or any other Rugby Clubs in the City taking part in it as it costs them nothing so they're seeing how it goes. There have been four or five meetings so far. Wasps have attended one.

Surely the best argument to broaden it out then, if it's not even club and council teaming up.

Could be that CCC are trying to use it to chum up with Wasps but I think it's just a case they've been very misguided. What about football, ice hockey, American Football, Gaelic Sports? Also what about the individual sports that have world champions hailing from our City and the surrounding region?

Yep, city of sport would be okay. We do have a rugby team, a football team, a rugby league team, an American football team, a speedway team and an ice hockey team too.

Do we still have a basketball team, or did they fall by the wayside? Crusaders wasn't it?

I'd rather not think down that path too much, because that'd be rather worrying evidence that their dispute with SISU sees them want to chase the football club away!

I want to know what money and other resources CCC are spending on each sport. Some research.

Following document gives a few clues. Nothing about Football, money is going into Swimming, Rugby and Badminton. Ice Hockey.

I'm pretty sure it is for spectators, not for participation.

rugby is 3rd in that and cricket is 2nd. As cov don't have a cricket team playing in cov, I don't see how the top 6 doesn't include rugby. I would assume it was 2nd or maybe even 1st ?

google shows wasps average home attendance of 15k last season and ccfc 12.5k

Yeah, but when we win the league this season and loads of people stop going to watch them lot because they have a really stupid name, the tables will turn.

Regarding your first point: participation is not really relevant though is it? The figures re spectators would surely be more impressive.

Councils aren't for promoting the watching of sport (what does that do for health and well-being?) they're supposed to be promoting participation.

I didn't say they do or should, I was simply pointing out that if you want to make a case against 'City of Rugby' then attendances are a better argument.

City of Sport would be fantastic but is probably unlikely as it would need investment into facilities. Focusing on rugby makes no sense to me, if the aim is to get people to participate football is the obvious choice. If the aim to to promote attendance at games should public grants really be going to that?

Would be interesting to see public money awarded locally per sport and how that compares against participation figures.
I suspect football would have a fairly low cost per participant - that's just a hunch not based on any evidence before people start making demands!
