What a weirdo he was. You wouldn't want him moving in next door.

Bit of a sensationalist title - but think you know what I mean;

After the the last few seasons and some of the flair, going forwards, having players like Hamer, Vik, O'Hare, playing some exciting football and failing to get over the line....
Are we/could we manage to just grind/luck our way into the play-off and possibly beyond with this group of just not very exciting or real stand out performers after all that has gone before!?!

Or will we possibly be found out/have used up all our luck before the end of the season.

If this team went up we would be hammered every week in the Prem -

If you’re waiting for us to have a solid PL squad before promotion you’ll be waiting a long time. Leeds will get battered every week next season and they’re a level above everyone in this division.

I actually think Leeds are more equipped now to stay up in their first season now

They’ll still get battered. You simply can’t afford/attract PL quality players in any significant number in this division. Anyone who goes up has to buy most of a new team.

Correct. Ipswich have gone and spent £150m this season to be an all-star Championship team.

We’ve spent £50m since Hamer and Vik left us and that’s still a pittance by comparison.

You just have to better than 3 teams in the first year

Obviously yes.
Player turnover for promoted teams is/usually has been huge.

If we go up we will stay up. Some how, some way.
We've got form. We've stopped up before. Many times.
So many times.

If we do manage to fluke our way to the prem I think without an absolutely massive investment we would get battered in the prem especially with our defence, not sure I fancy a season of that!

If it happened, take the money.
Wise investment means stability for years. Poor choices = Luton, Norwich et al.

No but you have to have a decent core; It is high risk to try to buy the bulk of a new team over a summer break. Notts Forest very much the exception. Burnley seem to have the right approach.

I see no point in being pummeled every week or even being Crystal Palace, where success is 16th and failure is 17th. Boring. I'd rather be chasing the Play offs each season. It's great fun, you win most weeks and the football is a high enough quality

We are losing money every year. Eventually it becomes unsustainable unless you get promoted or have an injection of cash.

And?

We've done Championship and got hammered. We've done league 1 and got hammered. We've done League 2 and struggled.

A season in the Prem would be good. Our younger supporters would get to go to some good grounds. We would make a lot of money. We would have a decent chance of becoming a yoyo club that manages to stay up one season and watch the next 3 come up.

Or we could forever be satisfied with trying to compete with 3 sides coming down with a pot full of money moaning how unfair it all is.

Luton are building a ground with their windfall. Much better than spending a fortune on players and still getting relegated.

The history & tradition of Cov City has no relevance !?

Possibly you are too young to remember but we stayed up on the last day of the season on 10 occasions whilst in the top flight. Survival is in the clubs dna.
We will be fine "IF" we get there.

Probably but so what? If we go up let’s treat it like Blackpool did, just play attacking football and enjoy it.

The money could set us up with some good prospects for the future, we could finally buy the arena or at least have funds to start seriously looking at a new arena (if Frasers won’t sell) and we get more widespread attention.

The Premier League is a far different beast to what it was then. If we get there we'll go down as we don't have the funding to by the players needed to stay up.

Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham & latterly Forest found a way to become established prem clubs.
9 or 10 wins is the target for starters.

If we go up we need a RW, CM, LB, 2xCB all for the starting lineup probably if we want to stay up

GK - Dovin
RB - van Ewijk
CB
CB
LB
CDM - Grimes/Sheaf
CM
CM - Rudoni
RW
ST - Wright/Simms
LW - Mason-Clark/Wright

I remember them well, thanks. Those times will have no effect now if we went up.
I'd imagine a fair percentage of the squad weren't even born when we got relegated.

If survival is in our DNA please explain why we got relegated. Three times.

It was a much different beast then and for a lot of those we were already an established top flight club.

The difference in fees and wages from the top division to the next was quite large, but absolutely nothing like now. The amount we've have to pay just to sign distinctly average players for that level would be eye-watering, and it's unlikely many would be busting a gut to play for us.

Hard to find without a load of work I can’t be arsed with (yet) but we’ve dropped from second in the xG league to I think 4th.

Someone said this theory before but I don’t buy it TBH. Teams at the top tend to be teams that win more than they lose. Leeds are consistently top for example. Would be interesting to see a correlation between time behind and xG but generally I just don’t buy that teams that go behind create more chances and concede fewer rather than just carrying on being behind.

I get you and I think I'm general you're correct but I think there is something to be said for the theory when applied to us as one of the good but not great teams of the division.

From the eye test I don't think we have been wildly different in terms of xG for in this run outside of perhaps the Leeds game and perhaps another (I can't remember but it was a dull one that we won 1-0). The difference has been at the back tho there have been a few worrying wobbles of late.

Our xG for the season to now is 1.57 per game so we're a bit down in that regard.

Without Haji, EMC you are going to struggle to get the same xG.

Interesting stat there tho is the below 1 XG against for quite a few teams. While having high XG is good, it does not favours if we have to score three to get three points like we did earlier in the season

Brentford only spent around £30 million on 4 players the first year after promotion, so it can be done.

They already had Raya, Pinnock, Norgaard, Janelt, Mbuemo, and Toney in their squad though. Crazy good squad-building in the Championship
