Bit of a sensationalist title - but think you know what I mean;

After the the last few seasons and some of the flair, going forwards, having players like Hamer, Vik, O'Hare, playing some exciting football and failing to get over the line....
Are we/could we manage to just grind/luck our way into the play-off and possibly beyond with this group of just not very exciting or real stand out performers after all that has gone before!?!

Or will we possibly be found out/have used up all our luck before the end of the season.

Discuss.....

The good news would be that we will be able to do the same on the way back to the Championship without the fans getting on the player’s backs

We were not good enough with good players were we? I’m not sure we’d get there without some quality in the team. It’s there, just not happening yet. The likes of Wright will shine in this team. Simms aswell. Our defence is the biggest concern but Lampard is working at that through getting the whole team to defend!

If we do manage to fluke our way to the prem I think without an absolutely massive investment we would get battered in the prem especially with our defence, not sure I fancy a season of that!

It would be a hard watch, but the parachute payments should put us into the same brackets as the Leeds, Southamptons and Burnleys of this world so I'd take it.

Calm down folks. We still need WBA or Blackburn to slip up and us to carry on as we are. It's a tall order

At the current run rate, we’ll overtake them both. WBA’s form under Mowbray has been inconsistent and replacing Corberan is no easy feat.

As for Blackburn, their manager has just left to go to a relegation threatened team. That’s not a good sign.

I’m confident we’ll catch and overtake both teams.

You’re right and the same applies to the teams in the autos atm. The gulf is so large.

Ipswich spent £150m on their squad this season!

We won’t get anywhere unless the defence improves and becomes settled - better strikers will rip one against us Dovin doing very well but he can’t hold out forever

Do you really want to shit your way up? I don't.

Prem quality: Dovin, Haji, Rudoni,
Borderline: Sheaf (if fit!), MVE, EMC, Grimes (?? no Prem team took him from Swansea when he was younger),

The rest, including as you can see, almost all our defence is nowhere near good enough. Maybe Kitching. We will inevitably be Southampton and maybe Luton thereafter (and please don't use the feeble 'Luton improved their ground' defence)

Without the bonus of a big transfer windfall we know roughly what the club's cash flow and DK's pockets allow each transfer window. It will need three windows to build a defence good enough to compete.

Nottingham Forest notwithstanding we need to be in the automatics to stand a chance of staying up. Aiming to be a yo yo club is like entering a lottery

Last 6 games 15 points.

Last 10 games 20 points

13 games left.

Hope we don’t have a dip like we did last season. 13pts/13games. It’s highly unlikely that will happen.

I wouldn’t worry about the team not being prem quality - until we get there!

No team promoted to the premier league is prem ready. We would have to recruit well in the summer to give ourselves the best shot. Either way though I’d take a pummelling every week in the prem then never go up. We have to aspire to being in the top division and by going up, we get parachute payments.

On recent results we are a play off team for sure but our form in those games is mid table.
Yesterday we were over run for most of the game by a bang average Wednesday team and could have lost heavily if they had any quality or luck up front.
We need to maximise the opportunity the next few games give us and try and grind out some performances against the big boys. Do that and we could finish 5th or 6th.
In reality whoever is in 3rd and 4th spot should have too much for us over two legs but falling at that hurdle will still be an amazing outcome from where we were and will help encourage the quality we need ready for a push next year.

Both WBA and Blackburn have had manager changes in recent days / weeks and yet when I started a topic about their (Blackburn's) form melting I got mocked. I am glad someone see its as I do. The upset and change cant be good for their immediate prospects, although to be fair Blackburn have won two on the bounce but i am sure will falter

That 'Luton blueprint' has backfired a bit!

I also don't think we can match the spending of Ipswich to have the EFL pick of the league.

Only Wright is even close to PL quality. We’d need a whole new squad and we’d probably buy one. We would probably go straight back down as most do and then you hope to keep a couple of the PL quality signings and go again like all the other clubs that get promoted.

If this is the way it happens, then so be it.

If we go up, it has the chance of setting the club up for years to come. You'd be silly to not "want" to go up like that.

Can't see us sustaining this level of performance and still scraping wins though. Form is superb, but performances have been a bit patchy and at times pretty dour - but teams do get into the top six doing this.

When we did our 19 game run a couple of seasons ago, we were solid and our counter attacking through Hamer/Vik was ruthless.

However, we haven't really ever encountered ourselves being very average, a bit lucky, and scraping results.....

I think it's better now than then although I think we also were underperforming in terms of output.

I think our xG now probably isn't far of what our total xG for the playoff season as a whole.

For a club that quite recently flirted with going out of business I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to achieve something that would bring in game changing revenue.

I totally understand that talking about football in terms of finance is quite vulgar to some but unfortunately that's the reality of the modern day game.

I also think all the youngsters who got frozen or drenched at Morecambe, Newport, Forest Green and so on deserve a few days out at the Old Traffords of this world.

We’ve been the better team in this stretch betting the Leeds and Wednesday games.

The difference in xG yesterday was 0.04 towards Wednesday and frankly, they really didn’t create any clear cut chances in the second half and their goal was a pretty lucky OG that ricocheted off Lati with no Wednesday players around him.

It was a pretty solid away performance where we created 4 decent chances and I’m still not sure why Simms’ disallowed goal was chalked off.

We’ve caught up 9 points on West Brom since Lampard has been here. West Brom frustrate me becuase in recent years they’ve not been better than us.

but they beat us it tight games. That Good Friday game is going to be critical

Yes, I was thinking about this and for their territorial dominance I couldn't remember a gilt edged chance. I think we'd have won without conceding if we'd held on a few minutes longer into the second half.

This is the important thing. The positivity of the last few years will be for nothing and wasted if we don't get up.

We still need to own our ground, and as fantastic as the Ryton now is, our training ground needs improving too.

Our academy could do with some significant new investment too.

The model to follow is the likes of Burnley who over the years have spent significantly on their infrastructure which has allowed them to yo-yo/enjoy a few seasons in the prem

I rewatched the highlights and just from that snippet you’d think we were on top. 1.56 xG divided by 22 amounts to 0.07 per shot which is not great, frankly.

Compare that to our 1.51 xG which was 0.19 per shot which is considered a ‘good chance’.

We went 1-0 up after 16 minutes and you could see we were happy to invite the extra pressure and defend. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Wednesday had a lot of shots as they were chasing the game.
