That's fair enough, tonight's game was a really good level though. If people don't want to watch women's football that's fine, but they don't need to slag it off either (not accusing you of that).

The level IS good. Shame that some people won't even watch it to see just how good it is (obviously nothing like the level of the men's game)

A number of Spanish players tonight were just as technically good as their counterparts in Spanish men's side for the most part.

As has been said many times, where it falls down is with the keepers. They are just not up to standard.

Because I’ve seen womens football in the past which was enough to put me off watching it ever again….even it is just to score virtual brownie points on a football forum

I think the biggest difference between mens and womens football is the mistakes that happen, many games are riddled with poor mistakes /decisions.
I watched tonight's game and was thoroughly entertained, some excellent football on display.
Anyone selling a ticket for the final

As good as they can be technically, let’s really not kid ourselves. The tempo is absolutely nowhere near the mens game. England women would struggle to get out of League Two - which may still be pretty generous.

England women would probably lose to England schoolboys. There’s been a few examples of elite women’s team getting beat by teenage boys.

I don’t mean to be disparaging because the growth of the woman's game is good. There’s a reason the sexes don’t compete together and it’s not because of sexism.

I think the key here is "in the past." The women's game has come on leaps and bounds these past few years.

The women's game is completely different. The same way that Sunday league is different to the Premier League. I don't refuse to watch women's matches, and in the same way as Sunday league, I'm not going to actively watch the game or become invested in it because the quality is sub par. And that's not going to change. The difference in technical ability and the physical differences between men and women aren't going to suddenly evaporate.
It’s fair to point out physical differences which mean you’re unlikely to see women competing directly with men at the top level of a sport like football (just as you wouldn’t expect a woman to run in the men’s 100 metres final).

But you’re saying that women have inherently poorer technical ability? Wow that speaks volumes.

In this Euro 2022 tournament I’ve seen numerous examples of passing and crossing that would put some of our first-teamers to shame. And for pure entertainment the QF between England and Spain was unbeatable.

In the 1920's women's football was more popular than the men's game

Crowd's of 50,000 were common place, obviously the war had a major part to play.
But presumably it was a good standard, that many people wouldn't pay to watch drivel.

Well that's the thing. It's come on so far in such a short space of time, the women's game, and I think people should revisit and give it another look.

If you watched women's football even just 4 years ago, it's so much better now. It was error riddled. Now there is the same sort of level and skill shown in the men's game.

Anyway, as many have said, it shouldn't be a comparison. It's different. Embrace it for what it is.

physically it’s not there but technically it’s improved. Like I said earlier I went to the Olympic game and it’s moved forward.

I want the women to win, I just can’t find myself building myself up for a game like I would for the mens team.

No true. I was excited for the game last night. It wasn't the same level as if it was the men though. Part of that is the obvious fact that the men's European Championships and World Cups are much more high profile than the women's equivalents.

I will definitely be very excited though should the England women get to the final here.

Don’t get me wrong, I really want them to win, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the standard in recent times.

I suppose you’re right in terms of profile, although one thing that annoys me there isn’t the same level of scrutiny when they lose as the men do. We’re kind of expected to buy the hype when they’re winning but keep quiet when they lose.

I don’t mean under Wiegman, I’m talking when they’ve recently lost in tournaments. They were 2nd favourites to win the euro 2017, got smashed by Netherlands, granted they lost to the US in the last World Cup - but whenever the men get knocked out it’s scrutinised for months.

its seen as a good effort when the women get knocked out

I was a skeptic a few years ago but the games I’ve caught I’ve been impressed by. Standard has really come on.

I don’t get why people are obsessed with the physical differences, who cares? While athleticism gives you an edge in sport it’s the technical ability and creativity of players that make football the beautiful game. Yes, the athleticism isn’t the same, the keepers struggle with the goal size, but aside from that the quality is very good.

Another aspect has been the sheer joy of the crowds. Great turnout and the crowds are just enjoying themselves without cynicism or hostility towards rivals. People may moan about it being a bit “Americanised”, heaven forbid anyone actually enjoys themselves. A refreshing change from the often toxic atmosphere of the mens game.

I’d caution anyone who feels the need to make jokes and cheap jibes. You might feel pretty daft about it in a few years and you’re likely to put off women from participating in what is likely a male dominated message board. That’s no way to treat a woman, a CCFC fan, or any human being. Presumably you wouldn’t undermine your own wife or daughter in the same way..?

In fairness it's happened a lot more recently too.
Top 10 side Brazil lost 6-0 to Gremio U16s last year in just a 60 minute match.

I generally agree though the women's game is massively improving & I thoroughly enjoyed the game last night. Spain were excellent until our goal & ultimately can feel a little hard done by.

In my opinion we should just enjoy it for what it is & encourage it to keep growing. The constant need to compare it with the Men's game is unnecessary & not particularly helpful.

I have noticed several comments about the poor standard of goalkeepers, which in many cases is correct.
The English keeper made an absolute worldie to stop a mishit cross that was looping over her head, she looked beaten all end's up but somehow saved it.
It was a game changer.
Credit where due.

Not sure how my comment has been taken as some insult to womens football. I was just saying that boys beat women in most athletic sports. That’s not a value judgement, men have higher athletic potential than women. I hope the womens game flourishes.

You’re missing the point by miles.

For all I know there are 16-y-o lads in this world who would beat the women’s Olympic champion in a sprint. Maybe that means the BBC should stop broadcasting women’s athletics because it’s second rate? Perhaps they should have relegated Steffi Graf vs Martina Navratilova to the radio, since it wasn’t worth watching. Of course not – it’s the females of the human species competing on a level playing field with each other in elite sport. The commitment, skill, drama and emotion are all on a par with the men, and deserve to be valued the same.

This Euro 2022 tournament is entertaining and captivating - but I guess because the players in League 2 are faster and stronger it would make sense to put Tranmere Rovers vs Leyton Orient on prime time TV instead. I can just hear the BBC announcer explaining that to people.

Edit - I've just seen shmmeee's later post, which makes sense

I haven't necessarily got a womb btw

Yep, the whole 'boys would beat them' argument doesn't make any sense unless you literally just rule out watching all women's sport all together, which in itself is mad. There will be male teenagers who would win the women's 100m final, win tennis grand slams, golf majors, marathons, triathlons etc. Men have a physical advantage. It doesn't mean it's not entertaining to watch elite sportswomen. Last night was a great game of football. Yes it had some errors in it, but there was a lot of very high level technical play, especially from the Spaniards. The right winger especially was very, very good. I think my Dad used to be a little bit of the 'women's game is crap' mentality. I remember asking him if he would be proud if his granddaughter played for the Lionesses and I think it has made him reevaluate as he takes an active interest in it now.

Edit: The 'you' here wasn't at you at all, as I know that isn't what you were saying.
