I actually think he's the most loved CCFC player of recent time. The only other ones I can think with similar support are Willson and Armstrong who were much better players .Social media is full of people begging him to join back and calling him 'captain'

I really don’t get it. He was alright. I don’t think he stood out particularly.
Is it maybe because he’s expressed his affection for cov?

He's been begging for us to sign him all season and we haven't so much as offered him a trial. Don't think he can take the hint.

That's the thing, wasn't he in the telegraph saying about how he wanted to be local but then got the call to go to India?

We shouldn't be a last resort in case there's nothing else, even more so when he's injured.

I think it's the fans and media who blow it up even more than him himself though.

Personally, I wouldnt sign him, purely based on how long he's been out injured, the amount of football he's missed and as we've seen with the 34+ club who have signed on the back of lack of games it takes too long to get match fit. I don't believe he's even got on the grass yet, and there's only 9 weeks left in the season, he may at a push make it for the last 2-3 weeks but won't be anywhere near match fit. In fact when he was interviewed in the fans village a few weeks ago, Baker didn't think he'd be back this season.

However, if Robin's believes he's fit enough, and signs him, i'll back him.

This is becoming a bit of a background distraction though.

Feel bad for the fans who have him held up as some kind of legend because that's how shite things have been in their time following the club.

Baker isn’t one of the best players we have had. He wouldn’t have got into the top flight teams and he wasn’t consistent enough in Division two. However, he was probably our best player for a couple of seasons in League One, both scoring and making lots of goals. He was player of the season at MK and he wiped the floor with us when MK played at the Ricoh just after Pressley was sacked. (Yes, we won that game but Baker was by far the best player on the pitch). As recently as last season he scored ten goals in this league and probably made a significant number as well. Just as some were saying Reid should never play for us again, Baker, apparently, should not be signed. As mentioned above, if he came on as a sub in only one game this season but contributed to a win that helped to get us promoted, I would take him on.

He has a decent 20 mins on Tuesday and nobody says owt. Baker was thrown out the club then moved for 10x money when we offered him next to fuck all
There’s a big difference

Just that Reid seems to be suggested as a better option but Baker taking a better deal is viewed by some as some sort of treachery. I don’t think he’s all that but at least he wants to be here

He’s not fit, he’s not training, and he hasn’t kicked a ball for months,
There’s only 2 months of this season left, so it’s easy to see why he’s not in contention.
Now can we PLEASE put this topic to bed, once and forall.

Didn't you say you didn't rate McSheffrey even before his move to Blues? Howcome? He had scored 15 league goals the season before, that's the most anyone scored for us in the Championship and he wasn't even a striker

And we talk about people finding their levels and the Championship was his. Proven by when he couldn’t do it when Birmingham got promoted to the Prem. Your right though, 15 goals is a decent return, not sure how many were pens though?
Lots of limitations were overlooked because he was from Coventry and people did/still do roll out the red carpet for him. Similar in a way to the Carl Baker scenario now when Thorn gave McSheffrey a foot back in the door unfortunately and I think everyone was glad to see the back of him when he couldn’t really do it anymore even in L1 During a disasterous second home coming of “the prodigal son”.

2 were penalties. I also remember you saying he got his move because Julian Joachim did all his work for him. Joachim left CCFC in 2004. Mcsheffrey moved in 2006.

Yeah I did and I’ll stick by that-a fit Joachim at the time certainly helped him. How do we know Blues were not monitoring him before 2006?

No that's not what you said. You said he got his move because of Joachim not that it helped him. I'm sure any younger player playing with an older more experienced player will benefit in some way. The lengths you will go to not say 'yes he was a good player for us during his first spell' is staggering. McSheffrey was a top Championship player and scored a goal every 3.5 games in that league throughout his career as a winger. He also scored a goal every 4.19 games for CCFC which over a 46 league game season is nearly 11 goals . I will ask you again, was McSheffrey a good player for CCFC before his move to Blues? Yes or no

With all that has gone on over the weekend it seems an odd time for you too now appear again. Wasn’t McSheffrey an academy product? Maybe this is why you have now chosen to come out of the woodwork again?
As for McSheffrey being “a top Championship player”, come on, let’s not go over the top.
He got his move to Blues which meant he could drive around in his new Range Rover and good for him.
I think most thought that 4m odd for him at the time was good business.
In reply to your question, he was a reasonable player at that level and if you go back to my post didn’t I say that 15 goals was a good return?
Now here’s a question for you-was he a good player when he came back in L1 for us?

All what’s gone on? We’ve had a game postponed that’s all

That isn’t answering my question. My question had a yes or no answer.

No he wasn’t, however I don’t deny it or try and make excuses for why he was poor unlike you with the laughable Joachim post. You for some reason have a difficult time saying he was a good player before he moved.

And yes McSheffrey was a top Championship player, just look at his stats. A goal every 3.5 games a winger in the Championship, these are facts you can’t argue them.

On average he scored 12 goals a season as a winger in the Championship. Only two wingers this season in the Championship have scored more or the same - Sessegnon at Fulham and Adomah at Villa, these clubs are 3rd and 4th. McSheffrey only played for a top Championship club for one season at Birmingham.

Try facts sometimes rather than just opinion

Which is exactly what you have just done-YOUR OPINION “he was a top Championship player” which isn’t a fact just your opinion of which you are entitled too the same as myself.
I did answer your question, I said he was a reasonable player for us but we done well to get 4m for him, not really sure why you want a “yes or no” answer, maybe to suit your post? But if pushed then (which is what you appear to want) was he a good player for us the answer is no, he was a reasonable player for us and not “a top Championship player” before he left.

Come on, he was terrible in his second spell, I remember people booing him and the ironic cheers when he used to get substituted. He could hardly take a penalty in the end for us. You know that saying you should never go back........

If McSheffrey was reasonable and had just become CCFCs top goal scorer in the Championship from wide and moved for 4m (which was a big fee for a Championship player then) then how did you rate everyone else in the squad?

The only player I remember you rating was Nathan Clarke

What does that say for everybody else if he was terrible and still managed to finish joint top goalscorer with Juke?

I think he’s shot himself in the foot. I think we were likely to have signed him had he not gone to play in India. Had he signed with us, he’d have been on a 1yr deal minimum and had that job security. This is said with hindsight because playing football in India would’ve been a good opportunity and probably a better pay packet at that point in his career. Shame it didn’t work out.

He’d have been a good signing in L2, last season he scored 8 or 9 so I think he would’ve brought goals from midfield. I think if he was close to full fitness in Jan, you could justify signing him, however, it’s March and he doesn’t even look close to playing. So I think the ship has sailed for this move, unfortunately.

What?

...because if he performed terribly like you say and still managed to finish joint top goalscorer then everyone else must have been absolutely shocking.

What CCFC players would you class as ‘good’ in the last 15 years?

Why? Again, we are talking about McSheffrey and “our opinions” on him so why are you trying to bring others into the equation?
Your opinion of him is different to mine-nothing wrong with that. Lets now leave it there, I’m not going to alter my view, neither are you.

You’re asking why I’m bringing others into the equation when you posted about Gary McSheffrey in a thread named ‘Any update on Baker’?..

I was wondering what players you rated as good because if you didn’t rate a player who was our top goalscorer in the Championship from wide (2001-2012) then who do you even rate

Anyway, you too have a good evening my friend

Mcsheffrey was decent when he came back until we were in league one where he had an abysmal season and was rightly slated, unfortunately people only remember that season. Pretty sure he got 15-20 goals over those two years in the champ which is a good return for someone who didn't start every game especially as we were dreadful.

Yes, he was pretty decent when he came back and scored a few goals. The expectations of him were always very high and he'd lost a little bit of his pace. He wasn't too bad in League 1 under Robins, but struggled once Pressley took over.

As for Baker, I wouldn't want to rely on him considering he's not played for a long time, but signing him and having him around could be positive (pay as you play or similar). He was after all promoted last season and will no doubt have some invaluable experience to help other players in the squad.

A fit and that’s the question Carl Baker would be ideal for the league run in and could propel us into the play off spots atleast certainly better than the two mis-fit loans we have.
