Bathroom sink has been slow to drain since I moved into this house 18 months ago, at the weekend got to the point where it took ten or fifteen minutes to drain after just washing your hands. So I bought some drain cleaner and just left it down there for the recommenced 15 minutes. It looked drained so I ran the hot tap to flush as instructed.

At this point the bathtub starts making bubbling noises then a load of brown shit bubbles up from the plug hole in the bath. Now my sink drains fine, but water immediately comes up out the bath plug hole (with added brown shit), then slowly drains away.

Fuck knows what’s going on behind the scenes as it’s all boxed away but I’m guessing the two share a pipe and the blockage has just moved down a bit.

Can I just do the same with the drain cleaner in the bath this time? Do I need to do both at once? Leave it for longer? Do something else? Trying to avoid calling the landlord for a plumber if I can sort it.

Looking at a lot of the reviews it says people were leaving it for 5-6 hours in some cases. Think you just need to wait longer before flushing it out.

Good chance you'll be able to dismantle the waste pipe if it's push fit. You won't be able too if it's solvent weld, but both options will let you see whats going on. Post up a pic if you want.

If you feel brave use caustic soda - but follow instructions carefully!

Cool. I’m going to try the unblocker one more time tonight for longer and if no luck I’ll take the panel off and have a gander. I’m moving out soon so am overly worried about breaking something with my soft computer programming hands. Appreciate the help.

If the chems don't work and you can't take it apart get yourself one of these.

Had to get one myself recently when the misses cut her own hair and just sent it down the plug hole in the bath. Can't access the waste under our bath as the bath panel is tiled.

Pretty basic, but have you tried the good old sink plunger? Once you get a good suction going, it can unblock pretty well.

I had a similar problem when moved to new house in March. Muck coming up though shower from sink.Turns out there is a Saniflo behind the loo which is boxed in so didn't realise. It had been swithced off when the removals knocked it. Wondered what the switch was and then I was away.

No no no! Do not buy any of that crap from the shop and put it down your basin. It sets like glass if you leave it in there! I’ve had to unblock many where that has happened.
Your basin waste pipe is obviously teed into the bath waste so the main pipe that goes out of the wall (which takes both) is blocJed and thus is why the basin is emptying, but instead of going outside it is going into the bath.
Try a plunger first-but cover up the overflow first with a rag or you will get squirted!
