Mark Robins rouses reconstructed Coventry to verge of Premier League

The former Manchester United striker has pulled Coventry back from the brink and is, in the words of one player, ‘a brilliant manager’
www.theguardian.com

Michael Doyle, whom Robins made his first signing and named captain, recalls a conversation on his first day back at Coventry. “I vividly remember him saying: ‘I’m getting a chief exec in, I’m getting the recruitment sorted,’” says Doyle, who retired last year. Robins also set about improving the gym facilities and making sure there was a dryer in the kit room, in between trying to shield his squad from mounting outside noise. “He was putting things in place on a weekly basis. He has built Coventry from the bottom up. For all he’s done at the club, he’s 90 minutes away from a statue of him going up outside the ground, and there are not many of those. He is just a brilliant manager.”

Two tone stood for the colour of your skin being an irrelevance to who you are as a person.

Precisely the opposite of the race baiting crap you get on BBC news or Sky

I don’t think that’s right

The main thrust of the 2 Tone message was one of racial harmony and anti-racism, one still valid today.

That's right, Pete. It was all about trying to defuse racial tensions, not stoke them like GBN.

I had two wonderful friends at school who were black and can remember clear as day at the away game at Blackburn when we won 5-2 the police being overly racist

Can I ask, are you colourblind when it comes to race?
When speaking to a black person for instance would you treat them differently to a white one?
Would you ever exclude someone from a job because of their colour?

Exactly.

So no need to treat people differently is there? No prejudice, but no special treatment either.

Oh there’s many reasons why positive discrimination is a good idea and there’s many reasons to ensure that being aware of how we are different helps us to live together with the harmony the specials dreamt of

There is no such thing as "positive discrimination", its just discrimination.
And its never a good thing. Discriminating on the basis of skin colour is racism. No good will ever come of it.

When you say being aware of how we are different, what do you mean? I was brought up to believe we're all fundamentally the same inside. Do you not think that?

Don't you think we would have a more harmonious society if we concentrated on our similarities rather than our differences?

Is it discrimination when people from poorer backgrounds get free school dinners? Or get grants for higher education? But rich people dont?

No. Because both the rich kids and poorer kids end up with a school dinner, or can afford uni. No individual is harmed or denied opportunity by it.

To use a pun it’s not as black and white as you seem to believe
Services that don’t reflect the make up of the society around them often don’t get the respect that is necessary for them to deliver those same services so tailoring an advert for a police vacancy to a certain community is positive discrimination that you can see is wise and helpful
Differences are histories and motivations and desires can be different and talking about them and understanding them means respect grows
For what it’s worth my own personal opinion on your final point is no not necessarily or yes possibly
Kids don’t see difference they learn it but as there is difference you (society I mean) needs to make equality of opportunity a reality and work out how this is done

Sorry for the many words

So apply the same principles to race and given the fact that some people have been oppressed for hundreds of years, you can obviously work out why just treating them the same isn’t always enough. But of course you know this you’re probably just a big fat white man who’s bitter he hasn’t made more of his privilege. Can’t really fix that….

I think you mean positive action Pete rather than positive discrimination. One is totally appropriate, the other illegal.

Yes, I'm sure GB News are aiming for a more harmonious society by giving a platform to David 'so many damned blacks' Starkey.

How can you be colourblind in this way? It's not about treating everyone the same. It's about providing equality of opportunity which has to take account of the discrimination that some people face and the privilege that others have.

See this is the problem with you people. You're obsessed with race. You see everything though the prism of colour. You fail to recognise these are actual human beings we're talking about here.

1. No person has been oppressed for hundreds of years. As no one is that old.
2. I can't work out why treating everyone the same isn't enough. Please explain why a black person born in 1990 should be treated better than a white person born in 1990. Neither suffered from anything before 1990, nor are responsible for anything before it.
3. What privilege? I went to a Coventry comp, growing up in a terraced house, with my Dad working on the track at Ryton. Please tell me what privilege I have?

4. Just out of curiosity, what would be your reaction to a job advert that said "No Irish applicants"?

You don't fight discrimination with discrimination.

How is it providing equality of opportunity when you can have a rich black kid being able to apply for a job opportunity, but a poor white kid is barred from it? How is that equality of opportunity?

Do you really think that is a sensible way to harmonise society?

Because it's taking focus away from where positive action is required. It's a deliberate attempt to divert away from issues.
