But seeing Lloyd McGrath snuff out the skills of the likes of Hoddle and Gascoigne was a skill in itself. Don't underestimate the skills required to be a good defender or a man to man marker. It's not all down to hard work you know.

It is a skill but not one to attract crowds

It attracts me, games that are 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 are often great battles and one bit of extra special skill unlocks the door and makes a difference.

Whereas games that are 3-1, 3-2 or 4-3 are full of errors and gifted goals. Goals often doesn't mean that you are entertained or that you watching high levels of skill.

Would like to see him back as soon as possible, but I guess with that kind of injury it's not likely this season.

One of the few "proper footballers" we have, and I agree with Robins that he's a big miss - I'm sure we'd be a lot more creative if he was in the team. As it is, there's far too much reliance on Jones, who's got great ability but is still learning his trade.

I'd be quite surprised if he does miss the whole season. I'd expect him back late March or April.

This is what I was wondering, how long does it take to get back after the op. Time for physio then fitness then game time ?

It always seems such a broad thing to say 'out for the season.' Has still to be an estimation, same as 2-3 weeks, or 2-3 months.

Think it just means long-term and that he probably won't come back.

Said it before and will say it again...I think he’s a massive loss for us this season. I think we’d offer so much more going forward with someone like him.

I bet Robins was devo’ed when he got injured. I suspect he was the ‘marquee’ signing Robins hoped would propel the promotion charge.

ACL’s can take up to a year to recover from. Using recover in the loosest sense of the word as very few players ever fully do get back to what they were before. Quickest time is 6-7 months. If he’s done his PCL too it’s 8-9 months minimum.

Done my right one 3 times now. PCL once and Medials twice too. They’re currently working out what to do with me. If I had 4 legs they would’ve used a bolt gun by now.

Sorry to hear about your woes CJ, it must be horrible. But it’s unduly pessimistic to say that very few recover fully – in the old days that was true, but most professionals seem to come back fine from ACL now, although it can take a long time.

Theo Walcott springs to mind – didn’t he say that he was even faster afterwards than before! I think Francesco Totti was another.

I found the link below from 2013 (and the surgical results keep improving all the time). It mentions numerous stars including Ruud van Nistelrooy & Alan Shearer, neither of whom did too badly after their ACL problems!

The Number Fourteen: Football Players after an ACL Tear

Hope the bolt gun stays in its box
