Cardiff seemingly one of the few caveman teams who leave players up for corners. So let's do a comparison:

Cov corner, Cardiff leave 2 players up, we keep 3 back in case of a clearance which left us with 6 players contesting their penalty area against 9 of theirs. Nearly every ball we crossed in, we lost the first contact.

Cardiff corner, we pack our own box leaving 9 of their players to contest our box against 11 of ours and we conceded a free header from it anyway.

Given that we can't counter attack like Liverpool from corners, we're making our own defensive job more difficult and eliminating the chance of counter attacking in the process anyway. Fewer men in the box makes your numerical advantage count more, allows your goalkeeper some space and also makes it easier to keep track of players anyway.

Yeah, I noticed that in the first half. Just six players in the box vs nine of theirs.

A lot of the debate around this goes into the % of goals you score from counter attacking the corner. That's not actually my main argument-forcing the opposition to keep men back gives your defenders and keeper an easier time.

They scored when we had everyone back, we couldn't win the headers when they kept 2 up.

It does my head in. Hopefully this is a Robins and Carr thing and Frank decides to leave two up.

Concerning that Bobby Thomas is the only one capable of getting on the end of a corner as well.

What about a Viveash thing? The guy is Teflon for criticism? I have never been convinced about his gold standards level of coaching. There was a lot of Viveash out on the grass today.

Even he only scored because Sheff Utd totally forgot about him.

Yeah completely agree, and it surprised me, I can't remember the last time I saw a team leave two up for a corner.

Ironically there was a period when MR left 3 up which completely flummoxed the opposition. I don't remember us conceding many goals because of it so not sure why in more recent years he reverted to having everyone back instead.

I think Kitching would win a few to be fair if he played.

Doesn’t even need to be 3, just 2 and then you get an easier time defending the corner like we saw yesterday.

MVE, Da'Silva or Sakamoto are not going to defend much in a crowded box. Leave 2 at least on the half way line, they will occupy 3 defenders, plus they all have speed

@MusicDating ’s post and screenshot from the Referee thread has fully traumatised me.

As he says almost everyone in the frame is doing something wrong. The only plausible challenges are from EMC and Rudoni and neither are near the action.

Bassette 10 yards from anyone and yet playing everyone onside

The body position of the two centre halves, Thomas missing the ball by a country mile and getting underneath its arc, Binks turning his back on the header appearing to flinch like a small child afraid of being hit by a cricket ball.

Collins seeming incredibly flat-footed in the still. But even if he manages to save the header he likely pushes it straight into the path of the Cardiff player than Ben Sheaf is now hopelessly on the wrong side of.

Basically it’s really hard to see how Cardiff don’t score from that corner.

I'd leave MvE in our box as he's the best player to lead a breakaway (as he did a couple of times last season to great effect)

There ought to be another thread….rant about how we are taking corners. Its almost the same swung in ball every time with the same results. When are we going to start to vary things again.

Thanks @JimmyHillsbeard I hadn't realised there was a corner rant thread! Yes, only 2 of our 11 players are actually marking an opponent and neither are defenders, leaving 3 of their 5 players in the area free. Abysmal.

The header flicks off the flinching Binks to take it away from Collins.

If nothing else, we could throw a Simms or Bassett up front to give us a outlet for if we have to go long and keep one of the defenders up field

Are we back to ranting about corners again?

Only seven teams scored more goals from set pieces than us last season. This season it’s only two.

One of the very few things we actually look better at this season. Strange one to complain about.

Yeah that’s my point, I think with lamps we will want to slow possession down and try and lock it down so don’t expect it but think on corners if we leave the solo striker up the field, we have an outlet if we get locked in so we can get out of our box

My rant was about how we’re defending them in fairness, not attacking them.

Must've missed this thread at the weekend, something we noticed too. Also, has anyone any stats on our goals from corners scored? Are they against teams who leave players up or who have 11 back?

Stick Dasilva and Sakamoto high and wide and MvE on the edge of the box for me, none of them are any use in the box.

Does anyone smarter than me on tactics (so, anyone with eyes) know why this seems to be the standard way to defend corners?

Liverpool are the best example, you invite the opposition to leave nobody back on the basis that if you win the ball you can counter super quickly and increase chances of a goal.

We are not Liverpool.

We used to leave 2 up top when defending corners but for some reason we need everyone back to defend one now but look less likely to actually defend it.Seems the more we have in there the less chance we have defending it.Saturday was a complete free header in the middle of the goal and Collins still couldn't stop it.
