that we almost certainly won't get ....

Chase on for Collins

Watford, Sheff Utd and Coventry keen on Shrewsbury striker

James Collins: Being chased by several clubs as he weighs up contract offer from Shrewsbury

Sky Sports understands a host of clubs are chasing Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins.
Collins, who finished as the Shrews' top scorer with 16 goals this season, is out of contract this summer and has yet to agree fresh terms.

Shrewsbury have offered Collins a new deal as they look to keep hold of the player following their promotion from League Two.

However, a number of sides are waiting in the wings to lure the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international away from the Greenhous Meadow Stadium.
Watford, Coventry and Sheffield United are all thought to be admirers of the former Aston Villa youngster and are weighing up moves this summer.

Also because cov dropped him around the age of 12 or some age similar, went back to playing sunday league before villa signed him up. He was in a very successful villa youth/reserve team and was their top scorer I believe. He's big, strong and wikipedia says his goals are something like 1 in 3 at Shrews. He'd be a cracking signing I reckon.

New poster after reading the forum for a while by the way, and no i'm not related to him or anything but went to primary school with him and played in the same team as him before he went to city.

i would be actually pleased if we did sign him, he's full of confidence after getting promoted, only 21, already got a decent record at Ireland U21 and league 2 and he's a local lad

Ah, a league 2 player

If we get him, along with Cody, we will have a proven league two strike force

Might come in handy in 2013/14

Don't want to sh!t on anyones idea of a player they think we could do with, but 1 goal in 3 in Div4?

We need experienced players. We need a proven goalscorer. Will another player mayve not ready for Div3 be a good move if we have limited numbers again? Good squad signing, maybe more, but we need more than maybe's

If SISU still is at the club after the summer, well then we should get him, if they have sold the club, well then someone better.

From what I've seen and heard of him he's more of a Clive Platt than an out and out goal scorer. Brings a lot to the team in terms of strength and hold up play, he'd be more mobile than Platt and chips in with goals too, could be good foil for Cody. What's Clive Platt's record in division 4?

Might be a gamble but without serious investment he's the type of player we have to take a gamble on.

The lad is certainly no Clive Platt, I watch him every week on the FLS playing for Shrews and Burton before that and he puts the goals in from shots, run ins and headers he is no slouch.
He is a big, strong lad and we should have kept him when he was a kid ( thanks Oggy you great big oaf ).
Him and his Dad were season ticket holders in the kop and he only ever wanted to play for us from when he was a little lad.
He was treated disgracefully when being rejected by City (by the aforementioned) so when the Vile came calling shortly after with a totally more professional attitude and set up plus an offer of a second chance for the lad, he went for it and eventually ended up signing professional terms with them.
Don't we need players who are desparate to play for the shirt, hell yes we do, and he certainly would not let us down like half of the wankers who wore it last season.

For the record I wasn't saying he was another Clive Platt, just that even though he's only 21 there's no chance of league 1 defenders bullying off the ball - he'll be doing the bullying. I think he's exactly the sort of player we need, and would complement Cody perfectly.

Played Sunday league against him a few times and with him on a few 5 a side tournaments, he seems to be doing the business at Shrewsbury his finishing was unbelievable for the standard we used to he's pretty big and strong. Could he do a job for us? Why not! Let's give him a shot he can't be worse than what we have.

Was gonna ask how old he was (so thanks). Maybe if we keep Platt, he can try andirons this fella into playing the game as he does?!? TBF to Platt, he hasnt done too badly in the step up to this level. It just came too late in his career IMO!

I wasn't knocking Platty, we could do with a few more with his attitude, always put a shift in and did his best which is all you can ask for.
As someone posted on here a while back, he was never intended to be a first choice and was only going to be a stop gap until King was up and running, so fair play to the bloke he has embraced his chance and has probably played at his highest level with us.
I've been watching the City for longer than I care to remember but I can definately say that I have never seen another centre forward get so little protection from "officials" as him and he still gets up and has a go back.
I think he's still worth another season and if his back holds up he may be able to bully a few goals for us next time round!

Not sure if this player is the answer but we certainly need someone who throws his weight around. Platt for a big man doesn't attack the ball very aggressively or use his strength effectively to upset the opposition defence, he sort of just heads it from a standing still position and he never uses his strength to get past players .

I haven't seen this lad play but he sort of sounds like a lower league Andy Carroll (no jokes here please) or a Steve Morrison type which would be the exact type of striker I would love here.

I keep hearing we need this type of player or that type of player. Let's keep it simple. We need a striker that scores goals and is played as a striker, not on the wing.

You hit the nail on the head. AT are you listening?...Sheffers centre forward...played on the left wing.....King centre forward...played on the wing 75% of the time. Jukebox centre forward...played on the wing 90% of the time. ALL of these players mentioned are centre forwards, but never really played in their proper positions. The core answer is....AT you're a poor tactician.

To be fair AT never played King or Juke on the wing, they just like to drift out wide. And actually if you look at Jukes goals scoring record from open play under AT compared to AB and Boro he actually got the best out of him.

And re: sheffers - at his peak under adams he played left wing, then moved to brum and got promotion playing left wing
