It will also be when interest in taking the club on should be at its peak, it'd be a top flight club complete with its own stadium complex. That and the running costs in the Prem are on another level entirely to the Championship and while he's a successful businessman he probably doesn't have the funds needed to sustain the club if we managed to stay in it for a few seasons.

Whole different set of challenges

Maybe a stupid question, but do accounts have to be made public? If so, showing to what extent you are in debt opens you up to undermining offers for key assets.

Some interesting loss figures for other lesser clubs. Have they got anyone that we might be interested in for such a tactic on our part?

All companies have to submit annual accounts available to the public. Depending on the size of the company, you can limit what you show although all companies have to show a balance sheet (which will show debts).

As most football clubs are seen as ‘large’ companies, they also have to disclose the profit and loss figures for the period.

Got to trust that as and when the time comes to pass the club on, it goes to people with a similar ethos, just more resources.

He nearly hit the absolute jackpot in 2023 having spent a minimal amount to nearly have a top flight club fall into his lap. Over these 3 years the club just looks and feels so much more professional than it was before, and he's driven a lot of that.

All slanted by a huge purple patch in terms of results over 18 months but that’s probably always the case and a bit of a no brainer

I thought I'd heard that they were changing requirements in the Companies Act now so even some small companies would need to publish a P&L account

Our wage:turnover ratio has also improved by a couple of points as well.

Not too bad all told - heavily reliant on Doug continuing to fund (which we all knew) and if we’d have sold Van Ewijk we’d have been near breakeven after allowing for depreciation/amortisation.

For the life of me I can’t work out why anyone would want to own a football club… unless they were a huge rich fan. Nobody seems to make any money out of it so why do it .

If you’re in it for money you need luck that isn’t really replicated in any other field of business. Doug, it seems, has that luck. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve built a fairly solid foundation as a club but we’ve lucked out by the 3 parachute teams arguably underperforming so far this season. In a normal season it’s entirely possible we’d have been a very competitive 3rd and having to go through the lottery of the playoffs again (still could).

The other main reasons are reputational laundering or ego trips.

Shows we’re just a far better run club than we were but even so, it’s totally unsustainable without player sales/trading or promotion. Hopefully all those fans who seem to want us spunking cash on any available player, higher wages etc can now see how dangerous that would be as however well run we are, we’re still losing £10m pa. It also goes to show why you can’t turn down offers like £6.5m for sheaf, who for all his ability doesn’t appear to be able to play a full season and was probably on £1m+ pa (£2m at Wrexham I bet)

Some of those other wage bills FP posted are horrendous and just a pure gambles on the futures of those clubs. I’d love to know what Wrexham, Blues and SU wage bills now

Not necessarily. Find a way to add loans in with compound high interest rates, or get preference shares with a high yield, and even though the clubs finances look toilet you can make more money than you put in.

Overall though, yes it's a money pit.

You can see why Sheaf went before Woolfie came in. The idea that we offered £10m for Hughes was just bananas but people just lap up the transfer window nonsense from the media. If we miss out for some reason then they'll need to be a bit of a rebuilding this summer.
