Don't think he'd wanna be second choice to Dovin imo. But I have always rated him. Think we'll get a loan in until Dovin is back.

We need a good 1st choice - for probably over half a season - if he displaces Dovin for the whole season - so be it.
Football moves on quickly. There is little to no sentiment.
If we want to improve, if we have aspiration, we will sign a keeper that will likely be/need to be 1st choice for the season.
Loan or permanent - doesn't matter.
If we can sign a keeper better than Dovin - great.
If not, I'd be concerned.

Nobody currently at the club is the answer.

Don't hold me too it as it's of course early days but we may well see Dovin earlier than planned, maybe October

His fitness, age, and the fact that as a keeper you don't have the constant repetitive motion and hits to the knee an outfield player does, could potentially mean he's back quicker than usual

He is currently 'walking' if it can be called that with aid of crutches, but he shouldn't be as long as first feared

Heres hoping

Gunn played pretty well against us, but it looks like he had an ordinary season away from those games. Not a fan of bringing in players based on them playing well against us, as we've been bitten by such signings in the past as mentioned earlier in the case of Clayton Ince.

Decent keeper but I think he will want to go somewhere to be first choice, which almost certainly he won’t be once Dovin is fit.

If Dovin is out until Christmas then we will need someone who’s capable of being number one the entire season. I think Dovin is a good keeper but there should be no guarantee he gets straight back into the side and it will probably bode poorly for our prospects next season if he does.

Overall, this is good news!

Either way, it’s time to move on and think of about signing a competent GK in case Dovin doesn’t come back early or gets injured again. Irrespective of what league we’re in next season, we need to phase out Collins and Wilson.

If they trust Luke Bell, perhaps it’s worth trying him in preseason.

Not good enough with the ball at his feet for the way Lampard likes to play.

I feel like the most likely option is a highly rated PL youngster on loan.

I’m available!

The good news is that I can start now, no transfer fee required and I’m happy to play just for travelling and other expenses.

The less good news is that I’m 70, have arthritis in both knees and my left hip and I’m grossly overweight.

For context the Opta stats show that my ability is behind Dovin and Bell by a humiliatingly huge amount.

I am however rated above Collins

Norwich are 14th with one of the best attacks in the division so something must be up with their defence…

While I think we need to sign someone capable of being first choice just in case Dovin's injury takes a while (or even factor in the remote possibility of a reoccurence/setback) but even then him having good competition for the spot is only good.

Even on a free I think Gunn would want decent wages and I think we could find someone better.

But all of this I think relies on at least one (preferably both) of Collins and Wilson moving on. Otherwise we'll be spending an awful lot of money on GK's when we really need to improve the depth of the squad.

I wonder what sort of insurance the club takes out against long term injuries?

I vaguely remember some comments made in the Strachan era that suggested they got caught out by an injury to an uninsured MacAllister (I think).

Sure someone on here said outside the Prem teams the cost of insurance on a whole squad isn’t worth it.

Dovin won't be back until January probably, and who's to say he'll be as good as he was?? Gunn on a season long contract with a clause to drop to No 2 if Dovin recovers well.
we might need a new keeper in the Prem tho

Our game at Hull recently, showed a class display by their keeper Pandur .
Held on to all we threw at him ….. cleanly !
Shame, as it prevented us from gaining those 2 precious extra points .
If Hull go down, he could be a great purchase & relatively cheap ?

It will be 9 months minimum, so January return.

Repetitive movements aren't an issue in ACLs, it's change of direction and single leg stability. Even though goalies don't do as much as the average outfield player, he still does need to be able to turn on the ball under pressure and land on the injured leg from a high, unstable jump.

Michael Cooper is a good example - ACL repair and was back in 9 months.

He’s on a long contract (only signed in Jan 2024) and could well be called into the full Croatia squad this summer. Also it appears that despite a good reputation, his game against us was by far his most outstanding game.

I'm wondering if there is a smart solution where we aim for someone much older but with a year left in them but with designs on becoming a coach post career? Frank must have some real contacts.

I really think the ideal would be a Simon Moore type, experienced, good around the dressing room, capable of stepping in for an extended period but then dropping back to a senior squad member role behind the scenes when Dovin is back.

Gunn and Collins rock bottom for xG prevented...

Johansson has crazy stats, Stoke would be gone without him...

Do we get Hazard from Plymouth as a stop gap?

Wasn’t he one of the best last season?

It’s all irrelevant because we’re not going to sign Angus Gunn. If anything, we’ll probably end up signing a keeper from abroad who is expected to deputise Dovin but capable enough to be trusted because we’ll need him for half a season minimum.
