Andy Turner's piece in the CT:

Andy Webster admits the Coventry City’s players bear full responsibility for the woeful form that has seen them slump to the brink of the relegation places.

The defender – the most senior member of the squad and stand-in skipper in Reda Johnson’s continued absence – says he is ready to take any criticism that’s levelled at him as the Sky Blues continue to bleed soft goals.

And, asked if manager Steven Pressley has the full backing of the players, he said: “Of course. We’re letting him down, we’re letting ourselves, the fans and the club down which, for us, is unacceptable.

“The boys don’t go out on the pitch and not try. We just need to be braver and show a lot of character to get ourselves out of the situation we’re in. We need to rectify that and there’s only one way to do that and that’s by sheer hard work.

“That’s what we’ll do between now and Saturday when we will try hard in a manner that’s going to win us a football match.”

Bold enough to face the press after Tuesday’s 4-1 shocker at Oldham, the 32-year-old said: “To say it’s a disappointing spell is an understatement.

“We’re just not doing the fundamentals right at the minute – basic defending and conceding sloppy goals. And you’re never going to give yourself the chance to win football matches if you do that.

“I think confidence plays a big factor in football. When things are going well lots of things seem to go your way with balls falling to you and if it’s defending you always seem to be in the right place at the right time.

“But when things aren’t going so well you always seem to be not in the right place at the right time, and we’re not doing well at the moment.”

Asked if the players are comfortable with this season’s formation, he insisted: “Yes, I think all the fundamentals are there. We have worked a lot on it, and I mean a lot, and there’s only so much you can do as a coach and a manager.

“We all know our roles and responsibilities within the team and our preparation is very thorough so we, collectively as a team, have no excuse for not implementing what we should be doing on the pitch.

“There’s a collective responsibility, and so there should be. Everybody, individually and collectively, needs to take a greater responsibility, especially during the games.”

City have conceded 13 goals in their last five League One matches, most of which have been highly avoidable.

“There are no excuses for us to concede sloppy goals and we need to hold our hands up and be man enough to take it, and take the criticism as well which is part and parcel of it,” he said.

“If you’re not doing well you’re going to get criticised and we, as players, need to take responsibility.

“For the older players like myself I have to take a greater responsibility. It’s difficult for the younger players to shoulder any sort of blame or criticism. When things are going well you take the plaudits and when things are not you need to soak up the criticism, or deal with it and use it in a positive manner as an incentive to do well.

“Me, personally, I’m happy to take any sort of criticism if it helps other people out, even during the game, that’s part of being a player and looking after the younger boys as well. That’s part of being the captain and being a more experienced player.”

The physicality and leadership of two key injured players, Reda Johnson and Frank Nouble, is a glaring miss for the Sky Blues, but Webster says that’s no excuse.

“The injuries haven’t helped but that’s for other people to comment on,” he said.

“But we have a side which is capable of winning football matches. As disappointing as it is – and we all want our best players on the pitch – we’re still capable of winning games.

“We do have a young squad and it’s a difficult period for everyone but we just need to win a football match and everything will change, whether it’s a scrappy 1-0 win it doesn’t matter how it comes about. We’ll take anything and if we work hard and do what we do and have a bit more self belief it will come.”

Hopefully with the players having 'discussions' in the changing room after recent games and Webster stating this personally, hopefully we'll see a change of fortunes and attitude at the weekend.

It's usually the back of an opposition players head as he runs into the box unchallenged isn't it?

Well Mr Webster you are one of the problems you were slow and flat footed last season and you still are.
