http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/sp...news/west-brom-striker-left-sweating-10021084

It has emerged that want-away West Brom striker Saido Berahino was left sweating over his ultimately failed move to Tottenham when close friend and new Sky Blues man Lateef Elford-Alliyu borrowed his rather posh motor.

The in-demand West Brom forward was the subject of two late transfer deadline day bids by Spurs but, while waiting to get the nod to say his much anticipated move was going ahead, his driver – Elford-Alliyu –*was trying to negotiate his own deal with the Sky Blues.

The Baggies’ striker had employed his former club-mate to ferry him around after receiving a 12-month ban for drink driving.

But there was an excited exchange between the two when the England Under-21 star thought his proposed £25million move to White Hart Lane was on.

Coventry City's Lateef Elford-Alliyu during the warm up before the match Burton match

Having dropped off Berahino off West Brom’s training ground in the morning, Elford-Alliyu was given permission to drive down the M6 to Coventry to sort out his own terms with former boss Tony Mowbray, whom he’d contacted out of the blue to ask if he could come and train with a view to trying to impress him into giving him a contract.

It seems that while discussing the finer details of the suck it and see four-month deal, Elford-Alliyu received a frantic phone call from Berahino who was convinced he was going to be given permission to speak to Mauricio Pochettino, and therefore preparing to hot-foot down to north London.

It left Elford-Alliyu in the tricky position of trying to conclude his own deal while believing he could jeopardise his employer's £25m dream move.

In the end, however, Berahino rang to say that no permission had been forthcoming and Alliyu was free to seal his own deal.

Bit of a strange situation this, or maybe just a strange report? Seems we were at the justice of berahino giving Alliyu "permission" to carry on his negotiation with Mowbray.

Does he need to be someones driver? Maybe, but thought he'd be able to get enough cash from football. Dunno, just a bit strange!

There is a misconception that because you are a footballer you must be wealthy... it's only really the prem players that are filthy rich...

Such a bizarre story. I'm certain that if spurs were willing to spend £25 million on a player they'd surely find a few quid to drive/fly him down to London........

Yeh and I guess this is what hit home really...the difference between the prem and league one in terms of wages, portrayed perfectly by this situation where he's being paid to drive him around. Just strange

Exactly! You'd think so. It's either very very weird or just crappy reporting

Not that strange really. Take football out of the equation, if your mate offered you decent money to hang out with him and drive him about, say £30k a year, you'd snap his hand off.

What is strange about someone doing a driving job when they are without a football contract? And working for a mate?

You've just reminded me to watch the Entourage film. Forgot about it.
