I was watching at work so i couldn’t hear the commentators, when they walked off for lunch I thought England had decided to give up and go home.

I've stated pretty loudly in the past that I don't think YJB should be anywhere near the test team anymore, but today, fair fucks to the bloke.
After the blow he took on the thumb, that is a very impressive knock.

I agree, he’s still higher in my list than Jos Buttler. Complete waste of space with the red ball

Buttler didnt seem too happy for Bairstow getting his ton. Hopefully the writing is on the wall for him. If they stay with a keeper/batsman then it should be Bairstow or if its a keeper the Foakes needs to come in

I think I read somewhere that Bairstow averages 5 when the ball is bowled on the stumps. I’ve given up on calling up Foakes - best wicket keeper by a mile but apparently even Billings is ahead of him

Yeah, bit of a wry smile. I’m a massive Buttler fan but looks like he might be better focussing on white ball. Guess he’ll be captain after Morgan as well.

Looking at our paucity of batters I’d probably say Bairstow to focus on batting at 5 and Folkes in as wk. Tail looked horrifically long today but fair play to Woody, he can hit a ball !

Also fair play to some of you lot staying up/watching it !!! Impressed. It’s been painful enough flicking through the replay first thing to catch up

It's such a shame that Morgan's back doesn't last 5 days, otherwise I'd have him as Test captain too. Not like his batting's worse that the current middle order!

Root should step down, but I really don't know who should replace him. Stokes is a natural leader, but cricket puts so much more pressure on a captain than any other sport and I'd worry for his mental health. It needs the next captain to say 'I'm just here for the toss mate, there are 11 captains out there', that might help.

I was lucky last night I was at work and in the only part of the building that gets a good enough signal for tv and is really quiet, so I was sat down with my feet up watching it and getting paid.

Crowd doesn't look huge.

Is that Covid restrictions or general ennui from Australia for the fifth day against England?

It is a miracle, we managed to bat out 102 overs to save the match.

Thought we’d fucked it at the end. Fair play to Buttler, Stokes and Bairstow playing through injuries. Great knocks from Crawley, Leach and Broad as well

Who knew that time out in the middle improves batsmen! Maybe with a few proper warm up matches over there we'd do better in the first few Tests

Yeah, we were on a loser from the start really. Just look at first test match drops. Poor team selections and some awful shots then compounded problems !

Bit of pride restored at least but need to somehow nick something out of last match….not easy looking at injury list. I hope out of those Bairstows fully fit. He looked good last winter before being sent home as part of rotation policy , would be a shame if he heads home when confidence should be high. Obviously need stokes fit for balance and also getting back in form but theres no way he will be be bowling and his place is assured, Bairstow needs to cement his

I would be shocked to see Stokes play even as just a batsman he looked in pain after a lot of shots, Buttler is out so that’s not bad as he looked half interested through the tour but can’t say Billings call up is very exciting. The commentators talking about calling up players like Adam Lyth and Sam Robson next summer made me shudder. But the good news is they will have Curran back as we have missed his 26 slogged runs and 1for 125 bowling

It's a poor situation when hanging on for a draw (when a series is already lost) is celebrated by the cricket media.
They've got a series in the West Indies to go where they did not perform well last time.
Then we get NZ and SA here in the summer - at least one of those sides isn't going to be that fazed by the local conditions.
When we start mentioning the likes of Lyth & Robson shows how bare the cupboard is for Test players -batsmen in particular.
We can go on about white ball cricket money but these central red ball contracts are 600-650k per year plus bonuses.
Sadly I think it's time to copy this Hundred format of pooling the better red ball players into a certain number of county sides to improve the level of competition at that level. Sort out the calendar and clamp down on the quality of pitches being used in CC cricket.

Maybe a little OTT. The pool of players isn’t so bad if managed/coached/selected correctly

Burns
Crawley
Malan
Pope
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Woakes
Foakes
Mahmood
Wood
Leach (hopefully Bess again in future)
Robinson
Anderson/Broad - probably only one going forward
Stone and Archer if/when fit

Also players like Vince, Billings etc. Sure there’s a few lads coming through county but don’t really follow it enough these days to comment. Could livingstone play tests for example ? Buttler is likely to focus on white ball but could still have a sniff in future

You should be able to make a competitive team out of that lot

this is just a poor justification of the current selection, Foakes is the best keeper in the country, Archer would have made a difference. That spell to Smith in 2019 was brutal, imagine him on Aussie pitches.

vince isn’t good enough, Bess is just like leach.

Foakes should have remained the wicketkeeper but there’s this fascination that Jos Buttler is this generation’s Adam Gilchrist

I was watching Malan and Root earlier. Commentator said they were looking quite comfortable and fluent….we all knew what would come next…and England didn’t let us down !!!

Chris Woakes is the only England player to reach double figures in every innings this series.

Batted better than he’s bowled overall. Think he could be a genuine all rounder at home. Not sure he gets in away from home on his current/previous form
