All teams go through phases like this. I remember some saying we should feel sorry for the Windies and the Aussies not long ago when they had a bad run-nonsense, it’s never reciprocated and why should it be?

We will struggle to produce quality test match players if we continue to let white ball cricket dominate the domestic game.

I don’t know if you’ve been to India but it sure as hell at club level dominate that. Our problem at the minute is we don’t have test quality opening batsmen and also a quality spin bowler. Also at home with out bowling attack and the ball we will always win more series than we lose. If you had Strauss trott and Cooke in that team we’d win

Stokes has too many personal issues to take the captaincy I think. Though in general I struggle to see any leaders out there so best let Root oversee the whitewash and put some more thought into it.

With a huge team of analysts on the sidelines relaying messages to the on-field captain not sure making a change will have that much impact. Not like there's an obvious candidate waiting in the wings or Roots own performance with the bat is suffering.

As you say passing it on to Stokes would be a bad idea given the blokes just taken months off for mental health issues, that's just asking for trouble. Who else is the batting line up would you even guarantee would be playing every game? You can't give it to Broad or Anderson even if you wanted to with the rest and rotation policy in place.

The issue for me is not that they lost. Nobody was expecting them to go there and win the Ashes. Its the way they lost. Even if you're going to lose 5-0 you can still put up a fight, win sessions of the game and at least give a hint that you might make it competitive.

This was so bad you've got Australians feeling sorry for England instead of celebrating an Ashes win. How bad do you have to be for that to happen?

The Ashes were lost in less time than England spent in quarantine. Yes the constant bubbles take their toll but other teams have to deal with the same and any player that was't mentally fit for the tour shouldn't have gone. If we're blaming the schedule then there's big questions to be asked of the ECB who agreed to that schedule.

I have a sneaky feeling if Root goes they might go outside of the group and bring in Vince to captain the side and unfortunately he will have to play as well. Stokes in the group is the only leader and he has some imagination unlike Root who is fairly easy to read.

You can’t just ‘make wicket machine go brrrrr’. The Aussies got wickets handed to them on a plate. We haven’t made 300 once in 6 attempts, never mind 400.

Laying the blame at Anderson and Broad’s door when both are winding down is widely missing the mark for me. Just my view
Broad and Anderson didn't even play in the 1st Test.
Whatever bowlers we've put out have not got the early wickets and that's another key feature of Test cricket no matter where you play.

We've batted poorly against a good attack that consistently had us 3 or 4 down within the first 30 odd overs. It's difficult to post 300 when that happens.
Now it's about character. India got bowled out for 36 in their first Test there but still managed to have the character to come back and win the series with back up players.

Is that debutant someone who strikes you as a 6-7 kind of bowler?

Absolutely not he’s a county trundler and no better than players like Norwell and Miles.

Exactly. I suspect if Ronnie Irani had taken 6 wickets against the Aussies they wouldn't be sat there directing most of the heat onto their own attack.

Positives I can take from the series so far, I’ve had more sleep than I had first hoped for and the skybet account is growing per game as it’s easy money even if it feels wrong to do it. Think they are better than Silverwood’s

Chris Silverwood: England coach to miss fourth Ashes Test after being forced to isolate for 10 days

England men's head coach Chris Silverwood will miss the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney after being forced to isolate for 10 days.
www.bbc.co.uk

When he said there were positives to take out of it, I'm not quite sure this is what he meant.

He'll spend more time quarantining than the duration of the next 2 Tests, for definite.

He is but I’ve always quite liked smith. Not sure why. His mental strength when he came back over here after the cheat scandal was unbelievable…especially when compared to watching our players crumble under any pressure

The pressure is really on Silverwood as Kirsten has said he would do the job but not the white ball stuff.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned before but I watched Death of a gentleman on Netflix yesterday. It’s about the battle between T20 and test cricket, India and to a slightly lesser extent England and Australia, controlling ICC, wanting larger slice of the pie and blocking plans for the wider benefit of the game. It’s a few years old but an interesting watch

ps Giles Clarke, comes across as a bit of a c*nt to say the least !
