It's being hugely oversold in terms of capabilities, at least at the general consumer level. I watched someone using the chrome mcp server the other day and prompted it to go to dominos pizza and retrieve the pizza sizes and I think it returned 2 results.

Too many hallucinations still and it's terrible at basic maths.

That's without going into the copyright stuff, social media ai slop dump, environmental impact.

It occasionally helps me debug code but I use it sparingly because if you rely on it it can create bigger issues than the ones you were originally trying to solve.

Some things I use AI for:
Product descriptions and a base with social media posts for my business, image editing, bounce ideas off on things I'm not sure of, creating some Excel sheets (then I generally still fill them in manually), trip planning.

On the flip side to that, if you use it regularly like probably most on here will, you can spot AI generated slop a mile off. But there are still plenty of people that won't have a clue, so it's still very much got a place. My missus had never heard of it until I said what it was.

The worrying thing for me I'd say is where the line is drawn with the videos, and where that is going.

When I was growing up, search engines already felt kind of a lazy way to find information. Now there's AI summaries of what the search engine will bring up so you don't even have to go checking through the results.

Saw someone on the bus last year using AI to write them a sick note excusing them from going to an interview. What kind of employer would want that anyway?

That’s a massive red flag, that said, was reading somewhere that because of requirement for UC was for receipts to apply for jobs, it’s supposedly flooded recruiters with job applications. AI is probably exacerbating that trend.

AI is a useful tool, but its outputs are only as good as its inputs. I’ve personally used ChatGPT to help with my interview preparation.
