Midfielder says non-footballing reasons led to his departure from the Ricoh Arena

Adam Barton admits his disappointment*at being released by Coventry City*after feeling he’d played his way back into favour with the Sky Blues.

The 26-year-old midfielder*ended his three-year spell at the Ricoh Arena*this summer, confirmed when he signed on a free transfer for League Two Portsmouth this week.

But after seemingly establishing himself in the side after a difficult spell under Steven Pressley, Barton said: “It was strange how Tony Mowbray played me for basically every single game he was there and even put me in a position to try to get me on the ball more – then let me go.

“What started to be a bad season at Coventry turned out to be one that was good for me. In the end I was 50/50 about whether I would be given a new contract.

“But I think there were other reasons as well rather than just the footballing side of things, which I can’t really go into.”

Barton has signed a two-year deal at Fratton Park, joining former City midfielder Paul Cook at Pompey who are being hotly tipped for promotion next season.

Why can't he go into the non football reasons he is now an ex employee, I would say they were pure football reasons for releasing him as every manager since we signed him has either left him out or tried to move him on. He was playing as there were no real alternatives.

He said it himself, 'non-footballing'. If he plays midfield he's got to at least pretend he wants to make a tackle at least once a game!

I'm sure he will be great in the masters for Coventry in 15 years, but right now he's not what we need. We need someone with a bit more about them!

Bloke was a liability would probably do better in the PL, Champ than L1 or L2.

His tortoise shell headers, even missing freeones etc irked me I understand 'that's not his game' but at this level the odd tackle & 70:30 challenge in his favour being bottled isn't on at any level.

Yes he played the odd wonder pass and occasionally was neat & tidy but his good performances were rare & not often enough.

Good riddance hopefully see the back of Connor Thomas too and bring in a couple of CM's that will battle there way through this division & not roll over & have their bellies tickled.

Barton may prosper at Pompey get rave reviews and city send fans and forums into meltdown 'Why did we let him go!?', but let's not let that get in the way of the fact he is NO loss.

Thought he might have had a clue when TM said he had seen all he wanted to know about certain players. That was the same game Barton was hauled off at half-time.

Silky skills and a deft touch can't mask a lack of backbone, inability to tackle, lack of pace, inability to head the ball, poor positioning and the drifting in and out of games.

One of the very best decisions TM has made so far to get shot.

The fact that he's ended up in the next league down tells him all he needs to know. Same as CB ending up in the same league at one of the promotion favorites tells you all you need to know about CB. I bet anyone who's connected to MK are still pinching themselves over that gift.

That's exactly my view too. In my opinion, Adam Barton does not have the mental strength required in the professional game and his tackling and heading skills were simply not good enough for L1.

As for him being 'confused' about the reasons for being released, he makes it clear that he is fully aware of them, so this doesn't stack up really.

Don't read too much into what he says. He believes it's non-footballing issue because he thinks he did alright on the pitch. And in there lies the problem with 90% of British footballers. They have egos as big as a balloon. They call it confidence. I'm a confidence player they will say but it really means I'm not as good as I thought.

We need players ready to battle to get out of this division. Barton isn't a battler. He is a bottler.

He reminds me of one of the lads in the 80's that told everyone he was up for the fight. He would shout and wind up the opposing supporters. But when the fighting started he would be nowhere near the battles he had caused.

For me he was a player with potential but never quite delivered. I just don't think that he was up for the fight when it was necessary and never had the confidence to show off his skills when we were on top and comfortable (ok this was not too often).
But hopefully he will get his chance at Portsmouth.

Perhaps not but I always had the impression that there was more to Barton than he produced for us. Yes at 27 he isn't going to suddenly blossom but I honestly think that we didn't see the best of him

I'm guessing the non-footballing reasons were that TM has a limited budget and thinks he can get better value than Barton.

I wish the bloke well, personally. There's a decent player in there somewhere, and maybe a new club will bring that out. However I'd trust TM's judgement on this.
