Sky Blues manager hoping to make a move for former loan man after centre-back was released by Birmingham

Steven Pressley is aiming to sign a new centre-half this summer to bolster his leaky Coventry City defence.

The Sky Blues boss
has a number of defensive targets in mind after his side shipped 77 goals in 46 League One outings last term.

And he has revealed that one of the players under consideration to help stem the flow is former loan man Aaron Martin, who is a free agent after being released by Birmingham City.
The 24-year-old played 12 times for Coventry while on loan from Premier League Southampton at the back end of the 2012/13 campaign, during which time Pressley was impressed enough to try to renew the arrangement the following season.
But Martin was sidelined with injury for the first half of last term and after his contract with the Saints was terminated by mutual consent in January he joined Blues on a short-term deal until the end of the season – playing only eight times for the Championship relegation battlers before being released by manager Lee Clarke.
“We’re in the market for a centre-back and he is on our list,” confirmed Pressley.“We’ve got a number of names we’re looking at over the course of the next couple of months and he’s one of a number of players in that position that we’re considering.
“As yet we haven’t made any actual decisive move for him but we are certainly considering it.”
Pressley used Andy Webster and Jordan Clarke as his regular pairing at the tail end of last season.
He squad also includes Dan Seaborne, who signed in January after an impressive loan spell and wore the captain’s armband on a number of occasions, and Jordan Willis, although Pressley thinks that the home-produced youngster is most effective at right-back.

Sounds like SP has to wait so I expect us to miss the boat !!
We only need one more centre half unless we are expecting to ship out one of the others.

Good signing if we get him and in a position I didn't think we'd have the luxury of addressing. Good stuff.

I'd sign him up. Offers us more than Seabourne IMO

Webster
Seabourne
Manset
Slager
Urquhart

IIRC Pressley has signed 5 perm deals since he arrived and 3 have been Centre Halves, the other 2 are no longer here.

I'd like us to got a really dirty/niggly/in your face/every other club hates him sort a CB. Someone of the Danny Shittu ilk. Someone who just doesn't take any crap, is probably a bit of a donkey but won't let anyone past. That sort of a defender! I know it's not pretty but you could have someone alongside that is completely the opposite. Our defence definitely needs something like that in my opinion.

Dull trivia moment: Danny Shittu was the first player to be sent off at th Ricoh I believe (first game v QPR). Doyle had wound him up even before the game started.

Arron Martin and Peter Clarke would be a decent partnership at this level

Remember that but I thought it was adebola? It was something to do with the tournament we'd been in during the summer (Ibiza trophy, or something like that)?

Martin Taylor... Exactly the sort of horrible b*stard I'm on about!

Mrs used to look after his kids, a really nice guy off the pitch. But granted your description of him on the pitch is about right

Could have been Dele. Perhaps I am thinking that Shittu was the one player that Doyle didn't wind up! Might have been him who was fouled by Shittu.

That was off the back of the Ibiza tour and tournament where it had kicked off so there was bad blood between the two sides before the season kicked off IIRC.

And the fans in the stands in Ibiza by all reports. Also outside the Ricoh I seem to recall.

Yeah, loads of players like that! At times last season it was like some of the defence were scared to put a foot in or put their head in when they knew it was going to hurt. Get someone in that can do that, and if he winds up some of the opposition players then that's a bonus! Shittu was an example

That is correct. Can't believe it's 9 years ago.

Agree with this. We have been far too nice as a team since the early Boothroyd days.

Aaron Martin,Aston Martin...........SP won't be able to afford either.

Have to get right player alongside Calum and a bloody minded 'they shall not pass' (and we can't !!)attitude from the rest of the team

Ah, once again we've lost out to a 'bigger' club who used to be a smaller club. Are Sphinx letting anyone go in close season? Just a thought.

Just a thought for Pressley and Waggot but what about rather than saying we have a list of targets and then naming them saying maybe in a month or so we might be able to sign them, not say anything and actually just go after the fooking players and try and sign them up!

The thing is the Telegraph long since gave up reporting news so just look for lazy sound bites or quotes to produce. Can't blame Pressley for answering the same question every week.

But I just wish he'd say no comment and actually went to try and sign a player or turn round and say can't at the minute as my hands are tied. Sick of all this list of targets bullshit that keeps getting pedaled out.

Why would anybody in their right mind sign for us if they have any other offers?

Long long season ahead.

I would and I've got the offer of a weekly game of 5-a-side with kit provided.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Anyone with any ambition would not choose to play at Northampton.

Got to look at the wonderful owners for that one.

It's about as predictable on here as Katie Price getting a divorce.
