Warning this is very specific.

Has anybody noticed that since Lampard has taken over that when we’re defending and a wide man is free coming into the box our defenders will stay central and not come out to block? I’ve noticed this loads, but two examples to show what I am talking about would be the Chaplin chance today when his shot ended up going for a throw and the first goal Sunderland scored in the play off at the CBS. I’m not criticising it, but just wondering what the logic would be?

It can’t be deliberate. It’s crazy!

I think it’s more defending the box / area. I think it’s deliberate and they’ve been trained to do it

I sort of get that, but surely that goes out the window when someone is coming in for a free show at goal!

Its been mentioned before.
The logic is if you pack the box then you are more capable of defending whatever the player on the ball produces.
We're not the only team to do it, but we are the best at it!

Yes, mentioned it on here last season I think. We defend the six yard box

Depends which scenario we are talking about. If we’re saying we want to “allow” the sort of chance Chaplin had that’s got to be absolutely wrong. There’s no point packing the 6 yard box when the guy is 8 yards out with a free shot at goal.

That makes sense thanks! It’s feels counter intuitive in some ways, but I’m not complaining with the results! In Frank I trust!

I noticed several times during tonight's game where the ball fell to them INSIDE the box and not one of our players was anywhere near and no one made an attempt to close them down. Better teams will punish us. I think we have been quite fortunate in defence this season.

I'm thrilled with the result and to be top of the league. Just worried that we still give up a lot of chances.

We don't give up a lot of chances at all, lowest xG against in the league. They had one big chance in the game tonight.

That's because the teams we have come against haven't had the quality to score from those promising positions.

The ball landed at the feet of their players several times tonight in positions better than both Torp's and Thomas-Asante's goals against Blackburn. They just didn't have the quality to capitalise.

Defensively we’re hugely improved. But they had more than one chance. Chaplin hit the post and sliced one out for a throw in. Plus they scored. I think it was more the formation as the game turned into a basketball match second half. Switch back to a back 4 on Saturday and we’ll look a lot more secure.
