Yes, I didn’t expect to see him back until at least January.

Is it ‘worth’ ‘rushing’ him back in goal?

Im sure it was mooted he'd be back in contention by Oct/Nov time. So if he's on the grass now working on strength and fitness, maybe another 6 weeks til back to full speed? I'd say he's there or there abouts looking middle of November.

By Xmas we will have a serious goalkeeper dilemma with this guy back fit. Olly is some player.

We are used to goalkeeper dilemmas, but not positive ones.

That's very early for an ACL, it only happened 6 months ago

Great to see him back out there. I guess the best case scenario is that Rushworth carries on growing into the role so there's no need to rush him back, then we draw a non/lower league side in the FA Cup to get him some easy game time after playing him in the U23's, and Lampard ends up with a headache.

Great to see.

Going to be an interesting battle for the shirt.

And not in the same way that Collins and Wilson was an interesting battle last season.

6-9 months is the suggested time frame. Unlike an outfield player who will have to excessively run, twist, and turn on his knee, a GK can theoretically return quicker as there is less stress and impact on it in that sense. Think you also have to take each individual in to account. Some people heal quicker that others. Age also, he's likely to recover quicker than say, a 45yo with the same injury. Its all subjective really. What I would say, is out back room staff, Dr's, Physios etc, will all be better than they were in L2 when Jodi Jones suffered the problem. So I can't see any of them rushing him back if he's not ready. Especially as I dont forsee him getting a game this side of Xmas, if at all this season. Nothing wrong though getting him training and if and when he's ready, get him out in the U23s

Being on the grass and being back is very different. I still don't think we see him back in the team in any form before Dec/Jan personally

Would it be a different recovery timeframe for a keeper as opposed to an outfield player Ive no idea tbh.

Nothing from that video suggested he’s ahead of schedule

He was doing basic balance movements which is to be expected in the final phase 3 months of recovery

Generally when they announce a player is back on the grass it means the injury has healed and they're back to doing strength and conditioning work, along with basic drills.

If the ACL wasn't considered to have healed then I don't think he'd be doing any running or putting any lateral strain on the knee.

Memphis Depay tore his ACL on 15 December 2019 and first played in a practice game on 1 July 2020. As I was doing physio after two ACL ops, my physio said he'd never known a player return quicker than Memphis. I'm back playing +50s and don't think about my knee - hopefully all smooth for Dovin.

Not necessarily, as you can start straight line jogging and running after about 3-4 months. Building up to contact sport is different and everybody is different.

The main thing is not to rush him or build up false expectations.

Wonderful news. We have missed him.

As a poster above said, I'd be tempted to let him settle until January, play a couple U23 games and his first game back be the FA Cup.

first time back on the grass end of sept, its now 19th jan 2026, ( arguably 3 months+ later) and Dovin still isnt on the bench, have i missed something or his recovery taken a hit?

Not necessarily. 9 months is the FASTEST recovery time from an ACL including 3 months physio/strength building. As we don't need to rush him back, it will probably be closer to the more ideal 12 month recovery time, so may see him around March, assuming no setbacks.

We may weigh up looking to accelerate this should Rushworth sustain a serious injury, but why rush things in our current position. Keep him on the training ground.

Frank also said he's not back training with the group yet which seems odd given the above. Points to some setback from those initial sessions?

No they are just probably being uber cautious because we are able to, as our current number 1 is the best keeper in the championship

Not everything’s a conspiracy

Pretty certain the club know more than they are saying about his return
