We have been training 1 week - Rangers have been in training 5 weeks and beat Lyon in a final 2 days ago to win a tournament – We normally hop abroad (not possible this year of course) start off with the games against the Dutch/German 2nd division sides etc and then the Leamington’s and Nuneaton’s – Now we are straight into a televised game against Rangers after 2 weeks training? does not sound promising

It's a friendly, it doesn't matter if we win or lose. What it will do is give Robins a great idea of exactly where the squad is at in terms of current match fitness, so he can map out the rest of pre-season accordingly. The players also get a chance to show they can compete with a higher level of opposition than we are used to. Think it's a great idea to get this one in early.

We’ll probably get battered but oh well, we’ll have only been back training for two weeks. Purely about match fitness this one.

Yeah there are no points on the line. I'm just grateful that I get to watch the champions in action again.

I imagine Robins is just taking the opportunity of having a game given that the Championship clubs continued playing while we haven't had a game in months.

Ideally we won't get absolutely annihilated but even if we do not sure it really matters.

It has as much meaning as playing Nuneaton. Fitness, getting back into the swing, no points as stake. Wouldn’t be too comfortable with getting a good thumping though!

Wonder what it would’ve been like if a tier 3 or 4 team were in the semi finals of the FA Cup not having played for 4 months.

Robins has already addressed this:

“The dates of training have been difficult,” the Manager said.

“We had to put a game in, the Rangers one which has been confirmed now, and it is a fantastic game but it’s early for us. They’ll be a week away from their season and we’ll be in the second/third week of our pre-season, so it will be a tough challenge.”

INTERVIEW: Mark Robins discusses the pre-season schedule and Rangers fixture

Manager Mark Robins has spoken about the pre-season schedule, as the Sky Blues began their training ahead of the 2020/21 Championship season this week.

At least we are getting friendlies sorted, a lot of clubs don’t know what league they will be in never mind looking at signings and pre season friendlies. Result doesn’t matter.

The Premier League and Championship is still ongoing, leaving Coventry City the top ranked home nation team available.
Its good preperation for Rangers and a financially agreeable workout for Coventry City.
You dont think Premier arent paying for the coverage.

If we don’t win this one Robins has to go. He can take Adi with him. Also if that new German lad don’t smack in a 30 yard screamer with his left foot he kept bigin up he can get the first flight back to Deutschland. I expect Hamer to lay a thick one into Ryan Kent in the first minute and Da Costa to sprint down the line and put a cross in ala Giles style.
Oh and if Godden don’t score then he is my boo boy for the season.

Lazy urban myth. They were a brilliant team but our squad that started the season was shocking and our team was probably the slowest I've ever seen.
The defence at the start of the season was Oggy (39) - Borrows (36), Daish (28), Williams (22), Burrows (28) with Kevin Richardson (34) and McAllister (32) in front of them. A man with a wooden leg and a stone in his shoe, who'd eaten some bad ham, could outpace them.

In attack, Salako's knees were done, Eoin Jess had flopped and Ndlovu couldn't reach the heights of previous seasons. It wasn't until November when Atkinson was moved upstairs and Huckerby came in to put some pace in the team that things started to improve. We won 4 games in a row in December and were 12th at the turn of the year. That defence was then strengthened with the signing of Gary Breen in January but our team was still not scoring enough goals as the threat was all from the strikers and no-where else on the pitch, so we tailed off again. Too many draws in games we should have won that season.

I don’t think Rangers will see it as too soon, we won’t be at our sharpest but Rangers will give us a good game

I remember that match clearly. What it did was totally fuck my illusions. It was a much hyped team that we somehow expected to do well. Benfica were not just a better team, they were better in every aspect. Skill, tactics, pace, professionalism. The continental game was far more advanced.

A rude awakening.

If my memory serves me correct an 8-1 defeat and could have been more, and I’m sure we scored first, not only a rude awakening but revealing the dinosaur tactics of an ageing manager in Ron Atkinson.

Your memory serves you wrong, it was 7-2. We were trying a new formation which obviously didn't work, we then scrapped it after working on it all pre-season and lost the opening game 3-0 at home to Forest.

On the 25th July 2009 Newcastle United lost 6-1 in their second to last friendly against Leyton orient with their full team out... They won the championship with 102 points...

It was at this moment I truly realised how little pre season matters in terms of results

Get your team as fit and sharp as humanly possible, we already know our system

Yes, and they then didn't win another game until January and finished rock bottom of the league. Another example that pre season results, and in fact first game of season results can be a misleading guide to its eventual outcome.
