Years of mediocrity has affected aspirations of many. We know what a piss poor league this was last season, Bristol City apart none of the others impressed me that much including MK Dons and Preston. I believe Tony Mowbray has that rare gift as a manager of making silk purses from sowes ears, from what i have seen this summer he has bought right, nice and slowly and looks like to a plan. Needs 2 or 3 more similar quality wise, the striking department the obvious one and a bit of luck injuries.
My concern lies with sisu or Waggott and Fisher same thing, made their situation re. the team fairly clear at that SCG meeting even at this early stage of the season questions need asking about their future intentions. Remember promotion or not similar budget restrictions will apply, £2.5 million if thats the correct figure is a joke.

I think Mowbray will see 14th as a poor season. Most City fans would be disappointed with that too.

Last season we finished 17th with 55 points. Walsall finished 14th with 59 points. We all said last season was a poor season for us. Are we really saying we'd be happy with only collecting 4 more points than we did last year? With the quality of manager we have now got instead of Pressley?

Has to be a top 10 finish for us. Aim for top 6, but make sure we are top 10.

Aim for 1st or why bother. This is League 1 FFS, support the manager and get a squad together capable of challenging at the top. People saying they would be happy with an improvement on last year need to remember just how bad it was last year. I'm sure TM has the ambition to succeed, sadly though he hasn't got the back up and with the current squad we are probably set to finish around mid table.

Top 10 minimum, top 6 aim, top 2 dreaming, we just need to be consistent and keep picking up points. I think personally we will finish in the playoffs get a couple more players in which we will do, more they play with each other (lol) the TM way, the more consistent we will become. PUSB.

My thinking too. I think we may well be in and around the top 6 for some time, but ultimately we will just fall short.

I don't think we will go up this year or next. Mowbray is a good manager, but even if he is waiting for the right players, it just seems to me we don't have the finances to compete with Sheffield United, Wigan and a few others.
It probably is the weakest League One in years, as well, but I don't fancy us to finish top 10, the squad is too weak right now.

That's just depressing. Surely just another £2 million given to the right manager would give us a great chance this year. What are the relative financial rewards for reaching the Championship ?
You can't get past the fact that these hedge fund cretins haver no further ambition than mediocrity on the pitch and success in the court room and the thought of mid table finishes in this league for the foreseeable future is a crime and the thought of Tim Fisher sitting in meetings with the so called SCG idiots feeding them all the bullshit they want to hear is nauseating.

If they want to make a return on their investment the best way to do that is for the club to be successful and go up and receive the windfalls that come with that.

Yes, it needs to happen sometimes but we largely have a similar squad to last season and the additions could be hit or miss.

Sorry to be negative, but I can't see anything better than around 15th.

You can't just add £2m to the budget as you have to keep wishing 60% of your turnover. Even if they injected equity they would need to inject nearly £3.5m.

Getting to the championship gives you about £5m extra in revenue, but you'll ready have spent that trying to get up and the other £1.5m will likely be gone on every player getting a promotion bonus and wage increase, then you're back to throwing £5-6m extra a year to try avoid relegation.

If you ignore the Ricoh and sixfields debacle, like the "badly run football clubs" thread, we're now saying that a badly run club is one that tries to be prudent with its spending like villa and Newcastle, etc. seems bonkers to me.

That's all very well but you are not accounting for the significant increases in revenue success would bring. I know money doesn't guarantee it but the support is waiting in the wings and the current strategy will just erode the supporter base down to bugger all. At the moment I doubt we are even utilising the full £2.5 million budget ?

We're probably not utilising the full £2.5m and we know that Mowbray has full control of that, that was one of the things he negotiated on in the summer.

And yes, success will bring more fans through the door, but then what happens when we're back to struggling in the championship with one of the lowest turnovers in the league despite midtable attendances? And what happens if we finished in play off and didn't go up? Throw another £3.5m next season? We all want promotion, we all want some success but we're going to have to do it through good management and recruitment (Yeovil and Swansea to name just two have managed it as have others). And that may mean It being a two year project. All this rubbish (not aimed at you) that we expect top 2, etc is unrealistic, and what happens if we miss out on top 6? Sack Mowbray?

Admirable words Stupot and I like your fighting spirit but football is in the entertainments game and with so much competition for peoples diminishing disposable income the product on the pitch this year is going to have to be 100% better than last years dirge to even maintain the status quo.

maybe its how low we have fallen, but I look at Wigan, Bradford, Millwall, Blackpool, Sheff Utd, Doncaster, Barnsley, Swindon, Bury etc and think this is the hardest division since we fell into it

Yep.

Look how much difference Grant Ward made. Look how much difference Dennis Wise made.

Not saying we will get a quality player like Wise, but let's wait and see until the jigsaw is completed and TM has his full squad in place. One key player or 2 and it could paint quite a different picture.
