We may need some to be tried slightly out of position... can we just go back to old school 4-4-2
I'd go with it, with the idea of whipping as many crosses in as possible either to biamous head or low to six yard line.It just makes us more defensive, especially with that personnel, 5 defenders, 3 pretty much defensively minded midfielders and only 2 recognised attacking players.

With who on the wings?
Personally I'd go
--------------Burge---------------
-----Davies--Mcdonald--Stokes---
-Grimmer--Doyle--Kelly--Haynes--
---------McNulty--Nazon----------
-------------Biamou--------------
Looks an OK team but thats effectively 7 defenders on the pitch!
Do we need to take a risk on leaking a few goals to try and actually score some?
Agree... Just concerned goals is our issue and we're losing Jones and replacing with a more instinctively defensive player...Only if there told to be.... let's face it MR wants he forwards to be defensive. Haynes and Grimmer can push a lot more forwards comfortably and let Doyle and Kelly(if fit) do what they do. Grimmer and Haynes are the only players in the squad left who can run at players with that injection of pace.
I'd like us to win without Kelly tomorrow if at all possible. It sounds like his injury is something that he just needs to rest off. If we don't play him tomorrow he then can sit out the FA Cup game and be back for the Christmas run in. Worst thing we can do is force him back and play those games without him.Anyone know if Grimmer will be back tomorrow? Know he get concussed a couple of weeks ago and MR is being precautionary but would be good to have him back. Same goes for Kelly, we weren't the same when he went off on Tuesday night.
No need to bring in an extra defender and go 352/532, we should resurrect the diamond.

My thoughts are regardless of Haynes defensive abilities, we're in league 2 there isn't another wide player of the quality of Jones so with Doyle and the wider central player going across to support Haynes we would be OK. Its more in possession where thr diamond would help us given the personal, and Haynes and grimmer would give us width, and strength to control possession in the middle. Is Haynes good enough defensively to do that? I wouldn’t say so.
If we narrow the midfield then we are going to leave him very exposed.
Could possibly go with a narrow 4-3-3?
Grimmer-Willis-Rod-Haynes
——Stevenson-Doyle-Kelly/Shipley

Not aimed at you, but I know a lot are clamouring for 532/352, but its never worked at Coventry under any manager that has tried it, so its either that, round pegs in square holes (I reckon robins will do) or trying something else, your 433 would be worth a try too.
So McNulty or nazon on the right wing today I reckon

Would also argue that the diamond hasn’t worked particularly well at Coventry either! And the only idiot to try- at least in my memory was Andy Thorn.
I think the players we have might suit it? I do just worry about the width as I say... also the diamond often involves being able to pass the ball to our own players!! Something we have struggled with!
Haha, yeah thats true, although we seem to be able to do it between the back 4 to doyl abd kelly and back again!
Tbf, the diamond worked worked in that 10 game stint after aidy boothroyd, it did fail the season after, but its hard to know whether it was thr system or the poor squad.
Yeah I agree, the lack of width is a worry. We really should have signed another winger in the summer!
