2025 'A' Level question in Football management

Discuss the relative importance of new signings against continuity with reference to Coventry City being 2nd in the Championship with not one new player in the outfield first XI?

Yes our squad is thin but the strength in depth we do have is serious quality

Simms
Bta
KKH
Dovin(soon hopefully anyway)
Woolfenden

Even our academy kid on bench is a Wales international

Then you have the good options in their own right in bidwell, brau, Eccles, lati and allen

Instead of being angry think people should be grateful for what we do have personally, especially as we know king and lampard are aware of what needs doing in next window

your right about the squad depth, we’ve got players who can come in and do a job, Saturday we could be forced to start Eccles, Allen and grimes and I’d still be confident we’d get a result

Not sure how Raj sakyai is getting on but godo looks really good for Strasbourg.

Gives me hope we judging well and got some good wingers lined up for January window

And 2 goals

Gassama another one we linked too looked very good for rangers even during a terrible season for them so far

Think recruitment team will have good options lined up for us

And also now we might have prem players willing to step down if it looks like we are primed to get an auto slot at that time

Exciting

2 goals came in 1 gam ethough to be fair. I just looked in his other two games he had low 6 ratings.

Gassama Rangers fans think is a 1 trick pony and were we even linked with him?

One player who has caught my eye from somehow ending up in the SPL is Jesper Karlsson who was loaned to Aberdeen. Didn't really work for him at Bologna and seems to be using Aberdeen to get up to speed having worked with their manager before, a player that really could play in a top 5 league if he sorts himself out. Has a decent record for the national team too. I think i'd rather take him than any player currently at Rangers funnily enough.

I don’t think we were ever linked to him. Just a fan on here said he would be a good signing for the price he was being sold for

Not the first comment on squad size he’s made. He’s not wrong either. We don’t have the squad for a sustained autos push and it will need a couple in Jan to give us a shot.

Lets face it, there's no way he's saying that in a short interview but won't have discussed, at length, with the owner. We'll get a couple in, i have no doubt.

Just normal managing up ain’t it? Got a window coming up, want to make it clear that if we fall off it’s most likely the squad. Saying it publicly just puts a little more pressure on Doug not to be stingy. Just like when Doug is interviewed he’ll go on about how skint we are.

He can say he's skint but he'll be like this if we're still top 2 in Jan.

Tbh sometimes I think his complaints are a little overblown, as the amount of quality we have in the squad seems relatively par for the course for a non-parachute payment Championship side. He’s obviously used to working with much bigger squads too. But seeing the intensity that we’re playing with, I can see why he wants more bodies through the door. I don’t think we sell Sheaf on deadline day if he hadn’t had assurances the money will be reinvested.

2 goals 2 assists in 213 mins of football, some on here turned their nose up at him.

He's right about the squad but it's also not a massive issue to solve. We're light one body that's starting quality on the flanks up top and in midfield. Two good signings and we're sorted.

Don't see him making that point as anything other than managing expectation and at a stretch, a reminder to King that if we want to sustain this form, we have to get it right in Jan.

Clearly Sheaf would be a handy back up right now, but the £6.5m was too much to resist given we have turned down money for him in the past, would get nowt for him next summer and he is continually a sick note.

A real top quality central defender and a good midfield prospect (like Torp when he arrived). Love Kitching, but neither him nor Thomas could cope with any top flight striker

It depends where we are with injuries ect.

Calling it massive is a bit dramatic at this stage when really we need another winger and a midfielder probably at best.

I wouldn't be doing too much to disrupt what could well be a very settled squad at that point apart from filling obvious gaps.

and we can be pretty confident we've got a decent chunk of change to use. Sheaf and Binks and the Vik money is about £12m. KKH and Woolfenden is about £6m so even if we only spend the difference, should be enough.

He’s just objectively correct on succession planning. Aside from KKH, there isn’t anyone being readied to step up when there’s a major sale.

I’d be happy with a versatile wide player and centre midfielder if they were both quality additions. A young version of Grimes please Doug.

I gave up a while ago because I’m convinced he’s got investment somewhere but last I checked we’re about break even on transfer spend since Doug came in. Maybe a couple of mil either way.

We’re clearly lacking quality backup all across midfield and on the wings. You can probably fill it all with two players if they’re the right profile but it still leaves us short from an ideal situation where we’d be subbing off 3-4 players a game to manage their fitness. The difference between the top three or four and the rest is that ability IMO. And yeah, it’s not cheap which is why it’s mostly parachute clubs that do it.

With the greatest respect to Lampard how many Championship clubs genuinely have that kind of luxury...?

It's exceptionally rare that if a key player is sold another is waiting in the wings ready and able to automatically step into their shoes.

He's only really correct in theory.

I wouldn't disrupt it either but it's massive in the sense that it'll likely make the difference or not to going up if we're in contention for the top 2.

I see his comments as an ambition more than a complaint to be fair to him. If we don’t go up this season, there will be a good amount of squad turnover and a fast start will be pretty unlikely.
