Ayari and Torp were the replacements and neither are fit to lace his boots in terms of impact on the side.

We were never going to replace like for like with hamer, not sure there’s another in our league quite like him in terms of play and output but you could argue that instead we have rebuilt the whole midfield with Torp, Grimes and Rudoni and had £5m leftover. I know what I’d prefer especially as sheafs been in and out since hamer left

All depends how you want to look at things

Spot on with Rudi's POV. If I was his agent I would be telling him to sit tight for another 6-12 months because if he can replicate his form from the 2nd half of last season there's a great chance he will be playing football for an established prem club next season, instead of jumping ship now and being stuck at a yoyo club like Gus is now.

Gus' yo-yo club forgot to do the second part of their yo. They'll be stuck here now.

We don’t have to argue semantics. I just don’t buy the argument that the team needs improvement in literally every outfield position, but is also primed for a playoff run to the extent that selling one player would torpedo the season.

Rudoni is the most important player by a mile tbf, head and shoulders above the others. Anyone who thinks he's not at least as important as Hamer was hasn't been watching properly.

I agree, but that doesn’t mean the squad overall can’t be improved by £20 million worth of replacements. And apparently those replacements are needed all over the pitch!

I'm expecting them to go full super market sweep with premier league loans after the 25 man squads are announced tomorrow, but I agree I think they will be in the same league next year.

Some people like to be dramatic. I've always been clear, we need a better CF, a better CB and a winger.. that would make a team that is absolutely nailed on one of the 6 best in the league rather than a team that 'could' finish there again. If we can do that without selling Rudoni then we should. Of course we'd need another CAM if we sold him too, a bloody good one at that.

Oh yeh, Loan FC gonna Loan FC. Think they missed their chance though, lost some good players and even with loans i think will be significantly weaker.

Yep I'm not sure how people can argue with that.

Ideally you lose BTA or Simms to accomodate that. Would leave the squad in a good place, if MVE doesn't leave and Sheaf isn't completely broken

I've never been sure how people can argue it as it seems blindingly obvious, yet i've been arguing it with several all summer

If we keep Rudoni it’s only 2 signings:

Rushworth / Wilson

KKH / Lati
CB / Thomas / Kitching / Bidwell
Dasilva / Brau

Grimes / Allen
Sheaf / Eccles
Rudoni / Torp

RW / Sakamoto
Wright / Simms
EMC / Asante

When we lose him it’s 5:

Rushworth / Wilson

MVE / KKH
CB / Thomas / Kitching / Lati
LB / Dasilva

Grimes / Allen
Sheaf / Eccles
CAM / Torp

RW / Sakamoto
Wright / Simms / Asante
LW / EMC

I’m not sure why Rudoni would go to Southampton. They’re more likely to go up than us, but if they don’t go up it’s going to hinder his next move. They’ll want plenty of money and he’ll be on a long contract, whereas we either go up or he goes next summer.

My worry would be a desperate PL club comes knocking in a couple of weeks, e.g. Leeds.

100% - Thomas needs a spell out the side for me. His concentration and decision making lets him down, otherwise he could be brilliant. For me he’s a better footballer and natural defender than Kitching but not as reliable and consistent with his performances.

7 of his assists were corners - not saying he hasn’t got a great delivery but again - doesn’t do much from open play!

I think Rudi is a good player but anyone who thinks he’s worth £25m needs a reality check

Why??? The fees being banded around over the summer are just ridiculous. Is Isai worth £150m?? NO, is Dibling at S’ton worth £37m… for years we have sold players for peanuts,, I would back King all the way if he held out for 25+ and would need applauding if he got it “providing Jack wanted the move??”

Dibbling has 1 decent half season in PL where the team finish rock bottom and were an embarrassment. Fee for this unproven kid? 37m... LOL!

Rudoni is not worth 20m, but you can't tell me Dibbling is worth double the price.

Game has absolutely gone!

If you put yourself in Doug’s position ( rather than that of a fans ) you buy a player in Rudi for £4m and the early season reaction from fans in Rudi’s first season is that we over paid, this gets revised as the season progresses.

someone comes along and offers you £20m for him. Frank et al tell you he will be worth more in 12 months time and to keep him but you also recall Robins telling you that Sheaf, Simms etc would be worth more last summer and look how that’s turned out.

In parallel the manager is telling you he wants a proven CH, Striker and midfielder oh and cover for right bank should Milan go. Oh and I’m not convinced that Raphael is cover for Tats, still a project etc etc

what would you do ?

if you sell now you can afford to buy many of the players the manager wants and you don’t run the risk that Rudi has an off season and his value plummets.

It’s not as easy as some fans think ….

Where has Lampard said he wants a striker? The reference I’ve seen is that he mentioned pre-Luton / post-Hull that we have no left wingers.

I’d be v disappointed if we sold Rudoni this late in the day. Unless we’ve got £20-30m in transfer outgoings lined up (assuming MVE sold too), I’m not sold on it.

We don’t have an AM to replace Rudoni and given that he was directly involved in 33% of our goals last season… it’s too risky to let him go.

We don’t know what Frank has told Doug do we but he will see what we see and that is that we are wasteful in front of goal, and we don’t hold the ball up well from that position either.

Lampard will be v happy with his striking options. Not many teams will have better depth than Wright, BTA and Simms. All of them have a track record of scoring in the Championship.

People will moan, but last season was an outlier for Simms and BTA. They get this season to turn it around before any changes need to be considered.

Last night, Simms should’ve scored 3 or 4 goals and was quite wasteful. But, he got a goal and the encouraging thing was that he found himself in a lot of positive positions in the box, where we want him.

I like the idea of a 4-4-2 with Simms and Wright and would like to see it in practice with a ‘full strength’ side. Rudoni, EMC/Sakamoto, Grimes and Torp in the side.

It’ll be disappointing if we sell Rudoni this late in the window. I understand we are a selling club, but it does put at risk the first half of the season if we don’t replace him, and I think it dents fan morale if we sell him to a league rival.
