We’re talking about Haji Wright and where his best position is and based on goals, it’s not LW.

In my view, I’m focused on putting the best around Haji to maximise his output… so signing players to keep the bench warm for him doesn’t do that.

I’ve said several times that if we sold BTA/Simms, I’d be happy to sign a replacement so we’re actually in agreement there.

How can 2nd or 3rd choice strikers be the problem when our CB scored more than a starting winger? All the top 4 teams had at least one winger with 10+ goal contributions and Leeds, Sheff U had at least 2.

I agree. Don't see anyone spending that amount on him. Maybe if he's loaned to the championship this season and is by far the best defender in the league, but he didn't set the world alight at Norwich last year. Right now I'd say he's probably worth between 5-6 million at a push.

We’re talking about Haji Wright and where his best position is and based on goals, it’s not LW.

Wright has scored and created plenty on the left. Up front he has not been especially impressive

This season, it was 8 goals up front split evenly between 3-4-1-2 (Robins), 4-2-3-1 (Lampard) and then 4 goals from LW.

23/24, he started upfront on his own in about 4 games? Maybe a few sub appearances (such as Leeds away) to add to that and he scored 3 goals. Meaning he scored 5 goals upfront with Godden/Simms. Considering you keep repeating that he’s ‘obviously’ better at LW, you’d think his goal scoring record would reflect that. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.

In his Cov career, there’s been marginal differences in terms of his goal scoring whether he’s in a front 2 or on his own. Thats without considering his career across Europe before he joined us (I believe in Turkey he was predominantly a loan striker in a 4-2-3-1/3-4-3).

I’m happy to draw a line under this conversation because you have your subjective opinion (which is fine), but whichever way you interpret the data, it suggests that he’s more effective as a striker.

To do what you do with Simms a lot and focus on this ‘games scored in’… He scored in 3 games as a LW this season and scored in 6 as a striker last season. Played 16 games as a LW, 10 as a striker.

Scored in 18.75% of his games as a winger versus 60% as a striker. So please continue.

Spoiler alert: we can crunch the 23/24 numbers too, but it’ll tell a similar story.

You are not acknowledging that he didn’t start well at the club and when the team hit form he was playing wide that season.

He has a lot more pace and can run at players in that position

I actually have. It was stated earlier that aside from a stretch under Robins, he hasn’t been as effective at LW than at striker.

He scored a brace v PNE (plus v Blackburn 3/4 games earlier) which was the game before we switched to a 4-2-3-1 and Haji’s role changed to LW.

Between Plymouth (H) and Boro (A), he scored 4 goals playing LW (Nov to Jan). His next goal in that position was Leeds (11 games) and then Ipswich at home. He scored 2 v Millwall, 1 v WBA, Huddersfield and Sheff W in between those goals as a striker.

We fund it with the mythical £5.5 million we allegedly bid for Rushworth, plus the money from the Gyokeres sale (if its not already spent) plus the sale of any of the following :- Collins, Wilson, Bidwell, Binks, Lats, Allen, Eccles, Simms or BTA.

Then there's the potential sale of MvE that the club have valued at £15million

And then there's some wages saved by loaning out Rapha, Andrews, and Bassette.

So, there's plenty of opportunity to bring in someone capable of getting us over the line.
And let's not forget we payed peanuts for Gyokeres (who scored more than 20 championship goals ) and Hamer so top quality doesn't have to cost the earth, and a premier league loan player isnt out of the question either.

You would looking at cold hard stats have concluded that Cyrille Regis was a terrible striker.

Other than his first two seasons with us he wasn’t.

There are many things you can’t just evaluate and conclude on goals scored. Regis admitted that Sillett changed his career by harnessing his strengths. He still was never a prolific goal scorer. He did though get the ball to feet and move and play others in.

When he plays wide he is far more effective. He can take players with him, he can move and out balls into dangerous areas as well as creating chances for others.

Playing wide inevitably reduces goal scoring opportunities anyway. You’d think Tommy Hutchison was rubbish.

It clearly shows that last season was the first time in 25 years that the championship top scorer didn't hit 20 goals, and It's only been 4 seasons since Mitrovic scored over 40!

For all of that well written prose, Haji sees himself as a striker and so does Lampard. If we make a big money signing upfront, it’s a sign we’re selling Haji.

Whilst you might not be convinced with EMC, his output at LW was much better than Haji’s. So if Haji is better at striker than at LW, and EMC is better than Haji at LW… this issue sorts itself out because Haji is a blue chip championship striker.

Statistically Wright is better through the middle.
Not only that, he see’s himself as a striker and i think its clear Lampard see’s him as that too.

Regardless of where along the front he plays, he needs that high line to play against. His best performances from memory have all come against teams employing one.

Maybe I’ve missed some of the posts relating to them but I’m wondering if it means they’re likely to be sold? Wouldn’t exactly get the guys to do a photoshoot if they know they’re off soon. I’ve not properly looked into it tbf, just a bit of late night speculation

Whatever mate, it seems it just you and that other one that thinks he's actually played better there for us. Not even said he won't play up front or that he's bad there, if we keep him he'll play both positions, he's certainly a hell of a lot better than the other strikers we own.

Main point to Shmmeee actually was if we do end up signing an actual good striker it puts Wright in an interesting position as I think Lampard prefers EMC on the left and if Lampard signs his own big money striker then suddenly Wright is far from guaranteed a starting spot. Regardless I'd like him to stay as I think you'd see us rotate the forwards more, but I don't know if he'd accept not starting every week.

The whole thing was done to deflect away from how poor our other forwards are. There a people who have been thinking it's a ludicrous proposition that we will sign another striker, just as there were those about signing another keeper. Let's see what happens shall we...
