Being real here “need” by what metric?

if we want top three sure, but we’ve achieved our stated aims comfortably enough without it. So is it a need?

There can't be a football manager anywhere who would aim for a slow start

Maybe not a need but early season momentum isn’t something we’ve witnessed for some while and it would be good to see what it produced

Seen an article yesterday that Wouter Burger is available for about 8 mill. Sheff Utd favourites, at that sort of money we should be getting involved.

We just don’t know our cash situation though, good player i must say. For all we know we’ve gambled on Vik signing elsewhere and spent his dosh on KKE? hop not though !!

Depends what our real aim is. They were never going to state top 2 is the aim. Myself? I'd like to see us challenging at the top of the table. 3rd or 4th would be great if top 2 doesn't happen. For this to happen we would 'need' to have at least a decent start.

Regardless, glad to hear Astutes/Lamps life is looking better.

I think Sunderland and Burnley showed the rest of the league how to go up, not necessarily nice football but have a solid defence and a decent but not overly impressive attack and clean the league that way.

From memory Burnley conceded very few goals and scored 66 (I think). Just sorting out our defence and I think we can do a Burnley (or Sunderland).

I think there is better ways to spend £8m on this squad

a quicker start may end up with us not scrambling around the last 2/3 trying to get into the play offs. We'd also get the chance to rest players and at least make an attempt at automatic promotion. 4 of the last five seasons i think have seen a non relegated side get automatic so its not in the realms of impossibility.

I think it would be easier to list those who haven't said it over the years

The best thing is I now have more time to go to games and it's normally cheaper to fly to the UK than use public transport in the UK. You can get flights for about €17 each way. Recently I flew to Scotland. Here to Stansted then to Edinburgh. I first looked at a train from Stansted which was nearly £150. The flights cost me less than £40 in total. I didn't expect to get the second flight easily but it left 3 hours after arrival at Stansted. Oh the hardship of having to sit in a bar at the airport and be able to taste cider again

But am I right in saying that only one team did it without parachute payments - Ipswich? Who we know spent a lot of money.

Only one of those didn’t have parachute payments (Ipswich)

Are we now down to just the 3 sides that have come down plus Sheffield United that are getting the payments? IIRC Sheffield United only get payments for 2 years as they only spent 1 year in the Prem.

Sheffield United rely on Hamer. Hopefully he is on his way out. We can only guess about Leicester but I wouldn't like to be in their position. Then we have Southampton and Ipswich.

I think that sounds right, because Norwich wouldn't still be receiving payments would they? TBH, you would think this would be the year that everything finally comes back to bite Leicester. I think Sheffield United's season really comes down to how Selles gets on. Southampton and Ipswich will be in the best positions.

It's difficult to say.

From memory we spent the MVE and Gyokeres money. Since then we have signed Grimes and KKH for about 8m. We have this mysterious 15m. Was it to help cash flow so we can sign players without having to sell first? Could it be it is an investment to cover signings and give it a real go this season?

On the other hand we're like the vast majority of clubs and sell players when a good enough bid comes in.
I would assume Lampard has been given some sort of guarantees he will be backed again this summer and not have players sold from underneath him without his say so. I guess the question is whether DK throws the kitchen sink this summer or continues to play the long game. Personally I hope we do not do anything stupid and we spend within our means, It only takes 1 prem club to come sniffing and Lampard could be off and we find ourselves in a mess again

Our spending over the last 2 seasons has been significantly high. There’s only Sheff Utd alongside the 3 relegated sides that have the payments.

Theres a question mark over Leicester currently - there’s a real opportunity this season to push that. I’m not saying it’s not tough but trying to stick around like Sunderland did is infinitely better than scrambling around like us and Bristol City with 1 game to go

If things unravel for Leicester, and Sheffield United have a bit of a regrouping season, then you only need one of the 2 money clubs left to slip up for a well positioned club to take advantage.

Their wage bill was estimated at around £20m. Sunderland too had a big squad with some high wages. If we want to be a top four club we need to be closer to parachute teams in terms of wage spending than the rest of the league because you need quality in depth to make it through the season without a dip in form or without going easy and building up to a head (and still limping across the line).

So you need three money clubs to slip up, plus the two money clubs who just came up.

Depends on your views of these clubs and what happens between now and August.

With everything going on with Leicester it wouldn't be a surprise if they're not involved at the end of the season. Ipswich look strong. Southampton could do well but they have a new manager.

Of the other 2 Birmingham could be a danger with the money they have spent but they still need to gel. I think Wrexham will be more in line with consolidation.

If they value Eccles at 5 million, that would be interesting. As a stand alone 8 million it's probably too much

I'd take Callum Wilson. Yes he's injury prone but when fit he'd be lethal in this league.

Also seen that Calvert-Lewin is being looked at by Man United funnily enough.
