The squad is pretty good. The starting 11 is very strong and we have enough versatility in the squad.

im going to assume that raph wanted to leave to get more minutes but we could have done with keeping him, and have gotten another striker/AF.

will be keen to see how many mins andrews get, thnk he could be a real gem.

I cant understand why we didn’t get a wide player who could play either side. Appreciate we were interested in Godo but we should have had a list of several we could pick up for a reasonable fee and try and develop.

At least Andrews will get minutes and hopefully develop.

There is lots of flexibility in the squad. Okay not perfect replacements but you will never get that. Some players put in certain positions will offer something different.

In an ideal world I would have liked someone who could play on both wings and at 10. Godo might have ticked that box and it seems we had interest. He went for a reported 7m in the end. Whether that put us off or maybe he preferred a move abroad who knows? But he does get the chance of some European Conference League football.

I said it on the transfer thread but I don't think it will be long until we see us go to a 5 atb and whilst I personally do not like it, it's proven to be effective. I think the business we have done has strengthened our arm for this adding a good 3rd CB, an attacking FB to rotate with Milan (who I think struggles playing RWB) & Brau looking like he would be better suited to LWB for the time being. The only counter to this I think was that Sheaf would be well suited to play in this formation.

Based on the first few games I think any formation that has Rudi, Torp & Haj playing the way they are is going to cause problems.

Also the problem we have is we can’t sign expensive players to sit on the bench either and loan players where their clubs are saying they are guaranteed playing time. So it’s a fine balance.

Yes indeed. If we have an injury crisis to our wingers then you eliminate that with wingbacks and 3 at the back.

Defence seems fine now but we really do lack depth in midfield and upfront. i guess you could have Rudoni play in Totp’s role if needed, but the revisionism around the forward players like BTA and Simms after the common consensus they should be moved on is pretty crazy.

BTA is basically our “cover” in every position which isn’t great.

It’s desperate but i’d genuinely consider getting in Emmanuel Dennis and Iannis Hagi

Brau, KKH and MVE are not wingers.

Brau, KKH and MVE are not wingers but can play in a wide midfield role. Dasilva has been a winger. I don't think Mason-Clarke is an out an out winger. More a wide attacking forward. Sakamoto is the only traditional winger we have.

They can't play in a 433 formation though. When has JDS been a winger in a 433?

When he was at Chelsea but got converted to a wing back/ full back. I think some of his England youth caps may have been on the wing.
OK, I thought you were talking about professional games. To me, a position a player played at youth and kids level doesn't suggest to me he's a viable option to play there.

Got to assume Brau and KKH were recruited on the basis they are fairly adaptable and can play in most wide positions?

He has knowledge of the position though. It is why he looks more comfortable attacking than he does defending, but that is just my opinion.

Any player playing in a secondary role won't be as good as someone in there main role. But football often requires that flexibility. Sometimes you have to tweek the tactics to suit. It does not matter if you have two wingers available for one spot, they won't be identical.

Perhaps. To me if JDS is ever turning out on the wing for us it signals a failure in squad planning.

Alot of these players mentioned might not be wingers but they can play there

It's not ideal but we have no idea how many times they will need to be called pon and how they might do either yet

The problem is, as mentioned, that it's hard to have the cover players who are as good as the first 11, they would want to play. Every squad has some kind of drop off I think. We have very experienced players below the first 11, BTA, Eccles, Lati, Bidwell, Allen etc. They are all going to play this year and have all played a lot at this level. I feel ok about it. I think this squad is good enough for play-offs again and might push for autos (although unlikely I think).

To be fair for a stop gap, it could work. Seems to have the attributes and defensively would help our fullback out.

Still think, Dasilva is an out and out WB. Definitely doesn’t help the argument on squad planning tho

It absolutely could not work playing Jay Da Silva as a LW in a 433. He does not have the attributes at all.

You don’t think, personally rate him more in attack than defence. Again wouldn’t want him playing week in week out.

But he’s got good dribbling and accurate in his passing. Dasilva and EMC below. Obvious difference is the shooting

He has no pace, can't beat a man and no strength. He would be a disaster as a LW
