Has it been confirmed who the captain will be this season? I am hoping it's Matt Grimes but I haven't heard about anything changing from last season so presumably Sheaf continues??

Sheaf will be the captain for as long as he is at the club I’d imagine

Who has captained when Sheaf hasn't played in the friendlies? Appreciate that he's club captain

Sheaf will be leaving to a top PL club for 20-25 million
Sheaf will be leaving to a bottom end PL club for 15 million
Sheaf will be leaving to a top Championship club for 5-10 million

Given that Eccles is seemingly attracting more interest than him, he's probably still going to be here and I would imagine will keep the captaincy. You don't really strip that from someone without causing turbulence.

Ideally though, we need someone who's going to be playing 90 minutes every game that should take the role. That really shouldn't be Sheaf with the players we've got this season, especially if we sign Pereira, which would then bump him down to a squad player.

Grimes would be the ideal candidate as a much better captain and leader, and someone who's likely to be one of the first names on the team sheet. He was captain at Swansea for several years I believe.

I'm sure Grimes will be defacto captain regardless. They won't take it off Sheaf but Grimes is the senior player and seems to set the tempo on the pitch.

Sheaf is captain but that won’t stop Grimes being a leader.

Just hope Sheaf can stay fit this year. Top, top player in this division when he’s fit.

I was certain it would be Grimes and that the only reason it wasn’t done straight away was to avoid rocking the boat.

But after Sheaf being captain midweek I’m not so sure now.

Sheaf = Club Captain
Grimes = Captain

Job done. Sheaf isn’t a leader on the pitch.

If Sheaf is captain it won't be for all the next season. There will be an injury or two over the season.

Grimes runs the show. He missed as many games in the previous 5 seasons as he did waiting for his transfer to us to go through. If Grimes isn't made captain at the start of the season I see him getting it when Sheaf is injured then keeping it.

If your talking about the armband itself, it will switch over but the actual capacity will stay with Sheaf as it did last season

2 captains?

New season. New start for everyone. Grimes is our most experienced player. He runs the show from midfield. He plays in a position where he can see what's happening and can talk to every player. To me it would be madness if Lampard didn't give it to Grimes.

Can see it being Grimes and Kitching as captain and vice captain if those roles still exist

If Sheaf is here he will be captain. The important thing is there's plenty of leaders in the squad now.

It should be Grimes replacing Sheaf. But it won't for fear of causing disharmony by taking it off Sheaf (even though a real captain would accept the decision of the manager with grace and just get on with leading the team without a piece of elastic around their arm)

Convinced we could sustainably power 5% of UK homes with your hatred for Ben Sheaf

Govt should look into it as a renewable energy resource

It really doesnt matter. Football isnt like it was in the 80s and it's not cricket or rugby. The armband is merely symbolic and what we need are leaders all over the pitch. Grimes will chip in, so will Kitching and Thomas. If and when called upon, Lati and Bidwell too. It’s more about how you conduct yourself. Yhe younger lads probably also look upto Sheaf off the pitch and lers not forget he was voted players player in 23/24, so whilst only half that squad was there, he will have the respect of the dressing room. Grimes is a more natural leader, but I expect them both to be part of the leadership team on the pitch.

If we could only round up the vibrational kinetic energy of the high pitched squarks coming from the seagulls that blindly echo the hype around him, we might be looking at more like 95%.

This is a thread about the captaincy. If you can't cope with people actively challenging the fact he isn't very good at it, perhaps you would be better suited to the BBC Bitesize safe space.

I actually completely agree with your take on the captaincy and his vs Grimes' suitability

Just genuinely no idea where you find the energy to keep posting the same things about his ability and value

In 00/01 we had a club captain (Paul Williams) and a team captain (Hadji) or something like that. Utter nonsense. Probably why we got relegated.

Not two captains.

What I meant was the armband was shared last season but there was only one club captain in Sheaf.

I think that will be the case this season (E.G. If Sheaf goes off the armband will go to another player)

Not a decision that needs to be made before the first league game - not out of the question that Sheaf could still move on

Anyone but Jake Bidwell or Jamie Allen I wouldn’t trust them in being captain in my sons under 11s games

Got to be Grimes for me. The one who dictates play. The one who is the link from defence to midfield. The most experienced player we have.

And best of all he hardly ever misses a game. Wish we could say that about Sheaf.

Sheaf will be captain while he's here and quite right. Grimes would probably be a good fit for vice captain.

I think it should always be a "defensive" player, either a sitting midfielder or in defence. No goalies, no AM or strikers.

Agreed.

Sheaf is too passive, inconsistent and injury prone to be a leader on the pitch, imho.
