CT: Tony Mowbray’s first task once he’s signed on the dotted line is to find two 20-goal-a-season strikers to fire Coventry City out of League One.

The 51-year-old is set to commit himself to a long-term contract after receiving assurances from owner Joy Seppala that he will be given the mandate to finally drive the Sky Blues to success.

And to do that Mowbray knows he needs to get goals back in the team – a vital ingredient that has been missing since Callum Wilson was sold to Bournemouth last summer.

“I sat and watched Callum on the TV recently and Callum Wilson in this team, with the domination of the ball we have, we’d just keep scoring goals,” said the former West Brom, Celtic and Middlesbrough boss who revealed he drew up a wanted list of targets before he’d even started his contract talks.

“But we have to look, we have to find and have people on the ground watching to find the player to score goals for us. So if this club wants to be at the top end of the table next year it needs to have 20-goal-a season strikers – two of them!”

It would appear that him signing a contract is now a formality from reading this article! Here's hoping today is the day so we can get down to business!

A good CB, DM, creative mid are equally important as a 20 goal striker; basically he has a team to build. We only have useful squad players at the moment. What we lack are the essential team members. Their isn't a position in the team that couldn't easily be improved.

Leon Clarke and Jamie Ward should get goals in a little man / big man partnership. But think we've relied too many times on the 'they should' approach

On a serious note let's just get TM on board so we can move the club forward and make things more positive . I really hope we can go out and find a 20 goal a season striker and add some more goals from different players to help us push on and have a decent season here's hoping...

That is the key -- Bristol I don't think did have a forward who scored 20 but had several players achieving 10 or more. Fleck, Barton, Thomas have no ability to contribute in this area.

getting so excited for next season!

i really think a top 6 season would mean more to cov fans than 99% of other clubs. we are just not used to looking at the table and being happy/excited.

Long way to go before we get too excited...we need a manager 1st then a few goal scorers and a team that actually believes and plays together

Craig Mackail Smith is available on a free. Good record at this level but is 31.

Mowbray I think will try and pluck a young striker who hasn't made it at a PL club. Similar to what he did with Ishmael Miller at WBA.

Just saw that Mackail-Smith has made 10 appearances in 2 years, perhaps not.

Whatever happened to that goal machine who Bobby Gould was talking about and said we should be after?

Pretty sure he hasn't made it at a PL club.

I think one of the 'fans' problems is that we think we know better than the manager. I know all footie fans are frustrated 'managers' but our fans take it to another level, 'complaining whinger' is a synonym for 'CCFC fans'. So lets just support the team and manager whoever they may be. Let the manager pick 'his' team and we don't need to shout abuse at him and tell him he don't know what he's doing.
This article is about 'main concern' and 'main target' yet people still say we need this and that like they know something about management and playing style,

Reading this article he talks about bringing in someone who hasn't quite lived up to expectation (like Miller), but I don't know if it his comments or the writer when he said 'clubs we have been working with'. That could mean Everton

Everton and Spurs will be the clubs he is talking to. Pennington was well looked after and won YPOS, Ward was also looked after and played every game. Hopefully they have some goal scoring strikers in their U21s they might let us develop

I don't think it would be unreasonable to expect the midfield to score twenty goals at least between them in a season, but with our midfield that would mean that JOB would have to get all twenty and Fleck etc would contribute 0.

As well as a 20 goal striker we need players who can set them up for him to finish them off.

I think BG was talking about John Mills from Didcot Town. He scored over fifty goals this season!

When my car broke down at Christmas the AA Man was a Didcot fan who was telling me about him. Strange he hasn't had any interest from lower league clubs.

Had a look at this guy when he was first mentioned. I think he was offered a trial or contract in league two but he didn't want to travel that far. Can't recall who it was but they were about the same distance away that we are.

The positive is that it looks like TM is here to stay which is superb news, i agree scanning through the posts that the midfield has to pull their weight equally however that would probably mean recruiting two wingers (and undoing SP failed tactics) as the middle three do not have 5 goals in them nevermind 10-20!

I know you are banned from talking about ex players but Baker has banged in the goals and had assists so we need two of him!

Of course, this all hinges on whether Joy puts her hand in her purse and gives TM a decent pot to spend.
