indeed. That's been one of the reasons my wife has been insistent on not going abroad this year.
While I'm happy to support the UK tourist industry I still think they take the piss a bit with the cost of rentals.
How much does the UK receive in tax from the likes of Tui, Jet2, Ryanair, EasyJet, BA etc... from flights? Is it really that much less compared to a so called 'staycation'?

I think it's more to do with keeping other industries going. People using hotels, restaurants, shops etc here rather than abroad and thus safeguarding their jobs.
Of course there is a bit of swings and roundabouts because the airlines etc will have less business and thus endanger jobs in that sector, but I guess they think protecting the wider economy to be more beneficial/important to that one sector.
