i suppose the main fact here is that Bradford saw our weakness at centre back..

Doesnt that tell us something ?

I think another issue is that due to Presley's clear out (which seems to have been the correct decision), we started the season with one recognised centre back in Willis who had very little first team experience. Jordan Clarke was drafted in to a position he doesn't play in at a professional level and he's been adapting ever since. He's there because we have no one else. He's not there because Pressley specifically wants a shorter centre back in that position. He's stayed there because he has done pretty well. If he was taller it's would be better but he does have a good leap on him. And to be fair Webster hardly won a single header against Hanson the other day so what chance did Clarke have?

I think people are little off track with Clarke and height...he ain't a midget. The criticism of him on Saturday was an air kick and a handball. That is not to say he didn't contribute positive things and he certainly has contributed overall this season. Murphy was out of position for the first two goals and Adams could have done better with one as well. The errors were as a collective rather than just individual errors. That is what made the goals so disappointing.

However we do lack aerial presence defending set pieces. That is a team issue not solely Clarke's failing. Even with Leon Clarke coming back it doesn't help that much as it's not his strongest point either. We lack cover in the CB position and if we bring someone into the squad I think it would be nice if they added a bit of aerial dominance. That doesn't mean we have to sacrifice the footballing aspect of our game, something Pressley won't be abandoning anyway.

If anyone can improve Clarke as a central defender I am confident Pressley is the man.

I think the problem is we have 5 defenders (including Murphy) who are prone to mistakes for various reasons (for three of them: inexperience) so we tend to get three or four mistakes from the back line each game. None of them stand out as need dropping, but something needs to be done. It could be we keep scoring until the mistakes clear up, or it could be we bring someone in.

My only worry is I get suspicious when a manager brings in a player he is sociable with and never drops him. I'd rather we replace Webster because a) he's not young and b) he doesn't do the job he's required to do (big CB) as well as he should. But I question whether Pressley would admit that and bring in a replacement so soon.

At the start of the season we were leaking silly goals, we have had a run where that hasn't been quite so apparent. The Webster/Clarke partnership is still relatively new. Webster lacks pace but is supplemented by Clarke. What Webster brings is vocals and organisation. He also scored on Saturday and got in a great position to score at Wolves, I think he will contribute at corners and set pieces.

Our biggest problem is to compete more in the air (everyone's responsibility) and react more quickly to the second ball in the penalty area. Both fullbacks switch off at times to what is behind them. Sometimes even to what is in front of them.

I think we have the potential of being a very tight unit with the players we have.

But as a squad we need cover for CB, a out an out winger who can play both flanks would add something and we need a striker as emergency cover for the dynamic duo in case of injury/loss of form.

Pressley on Clarke:

“What was interesting was that I could see he was disappointed after the game but that, for me, is terrific because that’s what I want,” he said. “I want players who are very conscious of their own performances and Jordan is one of those.
“I haven’t made any reference to it this week because his performances have been so high and it is part of football as a defender. Everyone has to remember how young he is as a centre-back.
“This is his first year playing in the position within the leagues. When I spoke about a number of players within our squad that could go the distance, Jordan is one of those because I believe he’s got all the attributes.
"He’s lightning quick and, although he’s not the tallest, he’s exceptional in the air and he can play in the manner I want us to play. He’s makes good use of the ball and reads the game really well.
“With all defenders, even the greatest defenders in the world, all have disappointments and it’s how they react to that. He trained really well this week and the one thing he knows is he’s got the absolute support of the players and the staff because he’s been exceptional this season.
“And if anyone thinks you can go through a season as a defender without the occasional mishap, they’re wrong – it’s the nature of the beast.
“With the exception of the goalkeeper it’s the most pressurised position on the park because any mistake can result in a goal, so that’s why it’s a difficult position.
“But if you look over the course of the season he’s made very, very few errors and he’s been a major factor in our performances this year and I've been absolutely delighted with him. And like any young player, and I think our supporters will appreciate how well he’s done.”

i dont think even his detractors(which includes me for a large part of his career) would argue with too much of the above.

tactics or not its not gonna work if he cant kick a ball out the air or jump against big guys

if he doesnt improve(fast) were gonna need to look elsewhere, plently of athletic tall centrebacks out there too.
Not exactly defending him earlier this week were you. Your previous comments on Jordan Clarke bear no resemblance to those of the Steven Pressley. Get off the players' case and support them. No need criticise every player every time he makes a mistake. it happens. It happens even more now we are a league 1 team than it used to.

You still havent named these tall athletic centre backs we can afford that are desperate to join a basket case of a club with no ground or money.

wow you really are dumb will

because i didn't defend him for making mistakes that = stringing him up??????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is what you are saying? yes or no?

as for last comment, i am not a scout,i dont work in football industry, i am saying SP should look for tall athletic defenders, i said from start i am not expecting JC to be dropped and still think he can do a job if he improves so dont bother with another silly comeback like "we need jordan till we buy someone new then" because i am well aware.

think to yourself mate,if i hated JC and was stringing him up why would i post SP glowing assessment?

I must be dumb because I dont agree with you - right?

You singled out Jordan Clarke. I reckon he knows he made a mistake. Surprisingly we all know he made a mistake without you pointing it out.

As futile as this is.

Goal at Wimbledon mistakes by Jordan Clarke and Andy Webster (he got beaten by the centre forward on the cross) Blair Adams may have done better at closing the cross down

1st goal Bradford - Webster nowhere to be seen although he was meant to be marking centre forward. Murphy missed header, Clarke made useless attempt at a clearance

2nd goal at Bradford was down to Webster

3rd goal down to Clarke

So why only criticism of Clarke?

And you claim plently of athletic tall centrebacks out there too but cant name one

I dont recall claiming you were stringing him up. So the answer to that is no. Im saying support your team instead of moaning about them it would be more helpful

and lets just ignore racism and hopefully it will leave the game

you live in la la land mate. i didnt start this thread and look how many people have commented last few days about their worries regarding JC,are you saying they are all bad cov fans? for simply discussing it?!!! stop being offended on jordans behalf so damn easily,SP said himself JC knows he fucked up so why the fuck should fans keep quiet? its not like we are tweeting him telling him hes shit is it?

you are clearly bias in this where as i am neutral, clarke gives away ball vs dons and you are desperatly trying to blame webster/adams for it. i think you ARE jordan clarke or a cousin or something.

your last line is BS too btw, speaking with fellow fans about a cov player making mistakes is not a sign of not supporting the lad or the club.

shall we jsut ban all football conversations between football fans full stop? that way nothing negative will ever be said again.

Where did racism come from - I hadnt even considered it - are you?. Thought we were having a football discussion, but first you told me I am dumb, now Im in la la land wherever that is,and all because i dont agree with you. Instead of desperately trying to blame anyone I was pointing out the futility of blaming people because you can get it in you head that a particular player is always to blame and Im sick of people slagging off players in their own team who are working as hard as they can and lazy tossers like Freddie Eastwood always got a standing ovation. I cant work it out myself. There is another thread just started slagging Barton for his performance at Bradford even thought he didnt play. Work that one out. Tell me, were Webster or Murphy at least partly to blame for the first goal at Bradford? (not blaming them mistakes happen) And you still havent named these stellar centre halves we should rush out and sign (I know you arent a scout but clearly you must have identified them because you said they exist, so name them).
