We were already on a very average run, masked by the odd decent win.It was such a jarring season and I think it leaves scars as a fan even now.
My memory was that we went on a terrible run exactly at this point of the season and dropped off.
What were other people’s memories of the drop off? Could history repeat itself and, if not, what are the differences and similarities with this season?
Mowbrays first season - top in November.
Started a sticky patch in December and never recovered.
In December - it's ok, we'll be fine
January - we'll comfortably make play offs at least - a win and we're back in the top 2.
February - We're still in the play offs
March - we need to win to stay in the playoffs - we'll do it.
April - we need wins and other results to go our way.
May - 9th.
(Roughly as it went)
Not saying it is going to happen - but many many people have kidded themselves in the past that everything will be fine! (And it hasn't been!)
I seem to remember us playing and winning well for a time? Result against Gillingham came to mind?We were already on a very average run, masked by the odd decent win.
Everyone kept saying it will be ok!!
(See my post in "10 more wins" - I'll try and copy it here)
Gillingham was November - we went top then.I seem to remember us playing and winning well for a time? Result against Gillingham came to mind?
The drop off felt like death by a thousand cuts. It really was odd.It was a very odd season. We looked a class above for the most part during the first few months. Fell completely apart over the winter, and then if I remember right found some form again right at the end when it was too late to do anything.
And that January window was an absolute honker. I mean, that and the summer window that followed are two of the worst transfer windows I can remember us having.
Yeah, we couldn’t mix it up when things were getting tough and that team was getting found out.Only had one ‘way’ of playing as well if I recall.
He went before Jan.Losing Ryan Kent in the January was a massive blow, add to that our form dropped off and Mowbray had no plan B, it was a very disappointing end to that season.
There was toxicity at the club too that really spiralled with the bad form. Sure that didn’t help.Yeah, we couldn’t mix it up when things were getting tough and that team was getting found out.
Yes you’re right, good memory! He went before Jan.
Recalled to play in a league cup game
Plus a couple of crap signings in the window who were playing in the Indian Premier League I think .Shoe horning Joe Cole into the team disrupted our flow iirc.
We didn't even make the play offs ,I was too depressed to look at the final table that season.Wigan finished top comfortably didn't they?
Oh we're on about Mowbray I think you have it wrong,it was the addition of Joe Cole and into the mix which was sometime in November not later, failing that we can go back to our season under Boothroyd at the protracted Marlon King episode followed by the boardroom implosion.Losing Ryan Kent in the January was a massive blow, add to that our form dropped off and Mowbray had no plan B, it was a very disappointing end to that season.
Armstrong was overused for an unproven, inexperienced young forward, in my opinion. He had a pronounced drought, of sorts, but to be honest 20 goals in 40 games was a fantastic return from him.this was the table on Jan 4th if i recall we spent the entire window not knowing if adam armstrong would stay on loan in the end he did but I think he then had a dip in form and goals, as others have said we were reliant on young loan players

@Earlsdon-Loyal-Blue to the thread please. That's @Earlsdon-Loyal-Blue to the thread please. Thank you.
Play offs aren’t a givenWell, well, well. With how badly the team are playing, I fear when we lose in the playoffs (again), a repeat of the 16/17 season is on the cards.
Doug King is that tight he only cries out of one eye, so I can’t see any January reinforcements helping us. We will probably sign a couple of players we have never heard of for the future, whilst our immediate future goes down like the Titanic.
