Going into the first game of that season we had this as a starting 11

Lee Burge
Jordan Willis
Reda Johnson
Sam Ricketts
Chris Stokes
John Fleck
Romain Vincelot
Jim O’brien
James Maddison
Ruben Lameiras
Adam Armstrong

and we beat Wigan 2-0 opening day at home, looking back to then shows how far we’ve come still score loads of goals but suspect at the back! Some big names we had in that season likes of Joe Cole, Jacob Murphy, James Maddison, Ryan Kent, Adam Armstrong, and of course who could forget Darius Henderson.

Feels crazy that this is about a decade ago

Joe Cole ruined it for me, tried accomodating him into the team and it upset the balance

I think Kent going back, Murphy's lack of form in the second half of the season, Maddison not quite performing at the level after he was loaned back and RCC in goal were more contributory than Cole's cameos. We had him at a time we were doing better. It was a miserable Jan / Feb period that cost us and won something like 4 or 5 out of last 6 games to take us up to 8th with play-offs out of reach well before then.

I remember going to the Nuneaton game the week before and Armstrong looked hopeless and like a boy against men.

Was expecting the worst going into this game and then he put in THAT performnace.
Was that the year where we didn’t score a single goal in pre-season or something weird like that? This forum was predicting disaster but we ended up fine.

Genuinely feel like this was the season we started to win a few fans back only to lose them again thanks to the abysmal end.

Murphy, Maddison and Armstrong were a joke at times at the start of the year. Biggest under achievement in our recent history.

Cole was great in the second half of the season. Others down tools and he worked his arse off.

I would also add that losing Ben Turner to injury also curtailed that season as we were awful at the back.

Must say it really galvanised a lot of fans as probably one of the most entertaining seasons since we’d been relegated from the top flight.

Young technically gifted players who enjoyed football.

Shame they ran out of steam towards the end of the season and didn’t really have the tactical nous to sustain the model Mowbray wanted.

That team should have gone up lets be honest and was a monumental capitulation that it didn't

I have been critical of Mowbray in the past and do believe whilst his hands were undoubtedly tied he left us in the lurch the following summer but life is too short to hold a grudge, zero doubts he loves the game and hope he is recovering well from his illness

I genuinely thought there was absolutely nothing stopping us after we spanked Crewe 5-0 on NYD - Then we played Walsall and Burton at home in the space of a couple of days who I believe were in and around the top 2 with us at the time - conceded a late goal to draw to Walsall then got completely done by Burton and it all went tumbling downhill from there

Don't agree signing Joe Cole affected us, Klopp recalling Ryan Kent just after he got the Liverpool gig to not even play him and a very average choice of goalkeeper let us down that season for me
