Lot of flapping about our defeat at West Brom, admittedly we didn’t play well throughout the team but at the end of the day it was only a 1-0 defeat against an in form team and we could have scored goals, one a bit of a sitter. Will be interesting which way Robins goes v Luton with Eccles, Godden fit and possibly McFadz, does he stay with wing backs, I’d be tempted to move away from that especially at home but then is McFadzean fit enough for a back four. I think Eccles and Godden should start and we go with a front two but I’m not the manager.

McFaz is a top performer in a back 3 as his best qualities are communication, organisation heading and anticipation. In a back 4 I think he would be exposed.

Starting line up is a tough one. Hopefully McFadzean is fit to start but I'd imagine he'll be rusty.
I'd keep Allen in the team as you lose that energy in midfield without and maybe bench Palmer for a second striker.
Eccles in for Norton-Cuffy

McFadz will be ok, all he's got to do is head the fucking ball away!! the young lads can do the chasing around.

I don't think that team would work.

Eccles and Sheaf would be doing the same job. It would be like against Wrexham with Kelly and Sheaf. Also playing Hamer out of position would reduce his impact on the game considerably.

What we need is support to Gyokeres. Playing him on his own up front hasn't been working for over a month now. Teams have worked it out and are putting two or three defenders on him knowing that if they stop him we are highly unlikely to score. We need to give him support. I am afraid that team wastes our two best players.
Who would you get to support Gyokeres? I guess Maguire would be the most likely fit as a hold up player.

We've tried Godden up top with Gyok and it doesn't work. Godden just seems to be a passenger as Vik puts his head down. Godden's skills are putting the ball in the net rather than linking up and if he's not getting picked out by Vik and we've only got one AM who may be looking to play him in he may as well not be on the pitch.

Hamer has the best passing ability and vision in the team, so if anyone can play through balls and create chances it's him. Plus further up the pitch Hamer may have more opportunity to shoot from range, something he again seems better at than the rest of the team.

I admit Eccles and Sheaf together would appear quite defensive, but if all they have to do is disrupt play and then lay it off to Hamer/Palmer to work some magic then so be it.

I'm not saying this team is a surefire winner, but I feel we need to change things up and there aren't many particular options available.

There has been a bit of a change in the way Gyok is playing, he's standing defenders up and getting towards the byline to put in crosses, wonder if it's a future tactic for him to work with Godden?

Probably lose cos it’s Luton innit and they’re on fire. But we’re at home so who knows. Optimistic 2-1

Absolutely Gyokeres and Godden up front! We're at fuckin home, we should be positive and attack minded otherwise we'll be playing 10 yards further back, more pressure on the defence which is our weakness at the moment.
Fadz defo to start, even if we can only get 45 mins out of him as we're starting games slow and very vulnerable at the back atm.
Hope it's a decent crowd and people are up for it. Cba with another dull 2nd half atmosphere! PUSB!

I would play Godden with Gyokeres. I don't agree that those two can't play together and in fact they did so to devastating effect against the best teams last season. Otherwise it would be Walker. I don't know about Maguire, having seen very little of him, although I must admit I wasn't at all impressed by his substitute appearance at West Brom.

I remember we did try Hamer in the more forward position in his first season and it didn't really work. I am sure he would be OK but not as good as in his natural position. I think he's our best player, a minority view maybe, but most would agree he is one of our best players. You have to play your best players in their best position.

We need more players who can score in the team. At present only Gyokeres, Hamer and maybe Palmer look likely to score. Bringing in Eccles alongside Sheaf, who has only scored in one of his 92 league matches for us, reduces our scoring capability even more. I don't think Maguire will help given his record so it has to be Godden or Walker.

Godden Gyokeres

Although I too think that playing Hamer further forward with Palmer behind Vik has the potential to be fruitful. Could be an option now that Eccles is back.

Hopefully McFadzean is back in from the start and we see a marked improvement at the back, Panzo seems like he might need a bit of time out from the starting 11 to be honest. Really difficult game this one I fear, hope we can sneak a win though and we've certainly produced more surprising wins than this would be over recent seasons.

Don’t think he will be I’m sure Robins has said he has a small tare in his hamstring.
I’d go with what a lot on here are saying and play Vik & Godden from the start but does that work with wing backs then can we play McFadz in a back two and then who with.

Been thinking along these lines myself - Bidwell more comfortable in defensive role behind Esbrand and McNally also giving Eccles licence to get forward.
Palmer as the most advanced of the 3 and hope he's seen enough of Godden at Ryton to see his runs.

Even so, not sure how people are seeing Luton (4th) as winnable but wrote off the Baggies game (when they were 10th) as a free hit

I'd worry a bit about who plays on the left in that scenario but i dont think Doyle or Panzo have been great recently so Rose might get a look-in

Wouldn’t be surprised if they play 3 midfielders either, I’ve felt that the better teams have worked us out recently. Swamp Hamer and Sheaf and we struggle to get the ball out of our half and end up lumping it long to Gyokeres.

I don't even think that's being 'worked out', it's the consequence of being so short of players and specifically a certain attacking midfielder. Chris Wilder pointed it out just before he got sacked.

This is why we need wingbacks that can wing and not just back to stretch the play. But they’re too busy helping out our hapless CBs and Wilson. And in theory we should have 4 in middle there but one is playing basically as a striker and one is completely ineffective at moving the ball forwards.

What I want :
Wilson
Burroughs - McNally - Doyle - Bidwell
Eccles - Sheaf
Hamer - Palmer
Godden - Gyokeres

What I’ll get :
Wilson
McNally - Doyle - Panzo
BNC - Sheaf - Hamer - Bidwell
Allen - Palmer
Gyokeres

then as for the score, we always lose to these fuckers so 1-0 Luton. Would be happy with a point

I was there and I'd say they put out a similar standard team to what we did against Wrexham, where on paper you'd expect them to win but they made enough changes that you could tell they just weren't quite clicking. They brought on 4 subs to end up with basically the same team as their last league game but it was all a bit late by then. Grimsby just went for them from the start and the game was gone by half time, their keeper made some important saves too.

Definitely won't be that easy for us. I'd bring Fadz back in if possible to head everything away, 1-1

Wilson
McNally Fadz Doyle
Eccles Hamer Sheaf Bidwell
Palmer
Vik Godden
