he’s an actual championship signing from a club who didn’t want to sell him and it would cost a lot to replace him with a like for like permanent signing

I’m sure it’s just his persona seems dull and not X Factor enough

He does look like a squat axe murderer who's just been rejected for WWE - that can't help.

Mastsen was poor defensively - I’d take Bidwell every time - also he’s not a loan but our player - he gets in great positions going forward as well but the midfield often don’t spot his movement

Whether they're permanent or loan is irrelevant when discussing who is the better player.

Bidwell gets the ball plenty in advanced positions but his final ball is lacking. Bidwell, in a worse team with less possession, makes more crosses per game than Maatsen this season but his cross completion rate is much worse.

The modern wing back doesn't need to be just defensively solid, they need to be good at both ends of the pitch. What Maatsen may lack defensively he more than makes up offensively and on overall balance is a better player.

I'd wager almost every team in this league that plays with wing backs would choose Maatsen over Bidwell.

Again, I'm not criticising Bidwell, he's a decent player. I'm just praising Maatsen.

Will be disappointed if we don't get a John Terry-esque block like this from Bidwell in his time here given his starting position relative to the ground

Bidwells doing great. Maatsen will prob have a better career and play higher level but for us right now we are in a good place and that's what matters most.

But you can’t sign Mastsen so why keep mentioning him.

He’s one of our best players and you do criticise him. On the last match thread you called him bang average. he’s not he’s a very good player at this level and a great signing, you said Swansea wanted rid of him

Maatsen is comfortably the better player.

This is not a criticism of Bidwell, he's a good player, it's just praise for Maatsen.

Comfortably better at what? Awful defensively and exciting going forward but with a wayward final ball more often than not

Except his final ball is better than Bidwell and the stats show it.

Saying Maatsen is better than Bidwell does not mean I think Bidwell is shit. If I say Messi is better than Ronaldo that does not mean I think Ronaldo is shit

His crossing was probably the weakest part of his game, but in fairness to both him and Bidwell it is not easy to pick out what is more often only one or two players in the box

Yeah his crossing was poor and his decision making in the final third was poor. I think he managed just a single assist whilst playing at wing back.

The only attribute Maatsen is far better than Bidwell is ball carrying.

I'd agree with that, although not really an attribute you measure a wing back on, I think it was 1 goal and 1 assist whilst playing wing back. For me he looked better in midfield.

Midfield, Bidwell was left wing back, same against reading. His only goal at left wing back was the screamer against Fulham.

Feels like a huge game tomorrow. Indifferent results since the World Cup, scary transfer window looming and a questionable “take over”. Could do with a boost

City players used cross into dustbins in training. Willie Carr was an expert. It’s a lot different picking out your exact spot in a game though.

Bang average was probably a bit heat of the moment, but I don't think he's as good as some make out.

Very solid but very unspectacular. I just want more from a modern wing back.

Quite why you're so offended by the notion that in my opinion a guy playing for the best team in the league might be better I have no idea.

It's just an opinion. Same as Kenny Jackett being better than Mark Robins is just an opinion.

Haha - was tempted to go there, but as I now live in Warwick, and as a former resident of the city, I refrained! - would have seemed like snobbery

We have a team of bin cleaners, who live in the bins (rent free) and get Sundays off. Nothing but generosity in this neck of the woods.

We certainly need something after the disappointment of Boxing Day.

With no COH it’s difficult to see what the best option is. For all his technical ability, Palmer won’t drive us forward in the same way. He is creative but in different way to COH. It certainly isn’t Allen’s game either.

Not sure the shouts for Dabo are justified. He had a mixed cameo the other night with glimpses of old Dabo and several of more recent Dabo. Burroughs has more physical presence, pace and isn’t scared to get forward.

I know he’s by far the finished article, and may never be, but Taveres needs more game time if we are struggling to create tonight after 60 minutes or so. Two up front with Palmer at 10 is worth a go. I prefer the box, but we can’t force it if we don’t have the players.

We still have enough quality to win tonight, but it’s partly on MR to see how he sets us up tactically tonight.

2-0, Gyokeres, Panzo.

This won’t be the team but I’d go:

Moore
Rose Doyle Panzo
Dabo Hamer Sheaf Bidwell
Burroughs Palmer
Vik

Thought Dabo was OK when he came on, give Burroughs a run in his favoured position to see how he gets on, adds a bit of height, pace and energy to that front three. If it’s not working out bring Waghorn or Tavares on for him and go two up top.

Think we can’t afford Wilson with no Fadz, need someone vocal to help the back line.

Definitely worth a go. It's not even an overly risky like up either. You've got Burroughs playing further forward and he can also tackle but is super quick. Didn't realise it was his preferred position? If so even better.

Cardiff there for taking tonight, it's a mess on and off field for them at the moment so we need to be going for it. First goal going our way could see them crumble.

I think he’s a CM more than an AM @SBchimp can confirm. But as a newbie i think that position is a little more forgiving. He can help Dabo out defensively as well and should have the energy O’Hare or Allen gives you.
