I 100% agree with your first paragraph. But costs can't be far off quadruple what they were originally and with stage 2 or whatever it was called cancelled its not going to deliver huge chunks of what it was supposed to, is it right to just carry on because we need more infrastructure spend?

There's been numerous less expensive alternatives proposed from more flexible ticketing to repurposing existing but unused stretches of track. I don't know how successful implementing these ideas would be but I pretty much guarantee HS2 will be an expensive failure. It's already been pared...
