As a general observation, I think most people probably underestimate how hard it must be to do live commentary well.

I recall that Hutch scored a legendary solo effort in an away game (Highbury or the Baseball Ground?) not long after he joined us. Was anyone here lucky enough to witness it?

United have deployed an interesting defensive formation there. The boomerang?

    My favourite goal

Gynn's equaliser against Leeds wasn't the greatest of goals, but it was the biggest explosion of noise I've ever experienced at a football match.

I'm with you on all of those Otis. It's funny how you can remember exactly where you were for the special goals - Crow's Nest for Ernie's lob, West End immediately behind the goal for Tommo against West Ham.

It's not over this season though is it? Points have accrued over years.

Wild celebrations are brilliant, the game would be pointless without them. But I really can't see what's wrong with the 11 players going crazy on the pitch, and everyone else going crazy off the pitch? The rule is there for good reason, and contrary to the claim that it's binary, clearly refs...

I agree he could (and maybe should) have ignored it in this instance, but you can't say it's a poor law! The ref has to have control over who is allowed on the pitch, and be able to apply sanctions.

If the rule wasn't there (or wasn't enforced for blatant acts like KP's) you'd be giving carte blanche for the whole bench to run on and join in with on-field celebrations, which would be chaos. He was crazy to do what he did, and it's so disappointing because he could have been a weapon for us...

OK that's clear enough. As discussed on here, people do seem to regularly get away with modest encroachment onto the field all the time. But how an experienced player thinks he can run right across the pitch the way KP did when the match hasn't finished is beyond me. I guess he wasn't warned by...

But as per ChiefDave's post (#220), the rule relating to a substituted player going on the pitch (which is different from the cases you have quoted) states that 'appropriate disciplinary action' should be taken, which does involve discretion.

I still can't defend KP doing what he did, but now you've posted this it does seem that the ref wasn't actually REQUIRED to book him, although he was entitled to if he thought it 'appropriate'. Was the ref applying the wrong rule, and does this warrant an appeal? Pretty sure it would be futile...

I can't really agree with you on this one. If you're not playing you can't run across the pitch during the match, which is surely obvious from schoolboy level upwards. KP has put himself out of this big game, which is sad for him and bad for the team.
