I think people have forgotten this is the "transfer targets" thread... which is why I posted in it this afternoon saying we needed a CM. Since then it's devolved into arguing over Josh Eccles' squad status.

Didn't quite think that saying Eccles was anything less than a nailed on starter would be so controversial. I get there's lots of support for him, local lad and a great attitude. But, we've got to be ruthless. Settling for him as our first choice CM alongside Sheaf will not be enough to compete...

Exactly! I've never said that Eccles is a bad player, just that we need to replace Hamer and that will naturally lead to Eccles dropping back to being a bench/squad player for the most part. Apparently that's sacrilege round here...

He was a ~1.5m player when we bought him. Which is what we must do again, although this time we could spend 5-10m. We have to do what we did with the Vik money. Go out and spend decently on a replacement or two.

Now you've just devolved into insulting me. The bottom line is Eccles simply doesn't have the technical abilities - range of passing, vision, close control that Gus used to completely orchestrate our play in possession last season. We will be a worse team overall with him playing in that position.

Yes, but he wasn't first choice in any position was he? He got starts when the likes of Palmer, Hamer, Sheaf, BNC, Dabo etc were injured/out. So he was a squad player, filling in when needed. People seem to be forgetting it took injuries to both Palmer and O'Hare for him to get a spot in that...

Eccles is a squad player. The only reason he's starting is that we've sold Hamer and not yet replaced him. Once that happens Eccles will be back to the bench.

This isn’t a conversation about how we set up last year? It’s whether we need to sign a Gus replacement or not. And we do, because Eccles can’t play that role to the standard we require.

Obviously Robins prefers 3 in midfield/2 strikers, it’s how we finished last season and spending £10m+ on strikers shows it’s how we’ll play this year.

Our 3 was much more fluid - more like a flat 3 than the 2-1 we play with Palmer/O’Hare in the side. Gus often came deep to collect the ball.

Anyone who thinks that we will achieve anywhere near the top 6 with Sheaf and Eccles playing as the 2 holding in a 3 man midfield is having a laugh really. We need a Hamer replacement who is going to come in and start the vast majority of games.

Haven’t written him off at all, he will do a job but we will concede if he continues playing wide. I think he’d be better used as cover for Fadz in the middle. I’m not out to slag off players, just pointing out areas in which we can and must improve if we want to be promoted.

Not at all! He has the turning circle of a tractor and the pace of one too! Good in the tackle but I’m not sure he’s suited to playing wide in a back 3.

That one wasn’t pace no, just generally poor play, but there were multiple times he got beaten for pace out wide.

He’s an obvious wrongun from what came out. Can’t believe in this day and age of PR and political correctness he’s likely getting to play again, and sadly all will be forgotten if he scores a few goals (a la Ronaldo, Partey etc)
