Thing is, with Sunderland, they are 7 points behind 2nd place and very unlikely to make that difference up in the remaining games. They are also 15 points clear of 7th, so their playoff place is secured. Might well explain why they have gone off the boil a little of late.

That's the bit that doesn't add up. The only way that would work is if the player had already agreed a deal.

Don't like to be cynical, but I do wonder if he will suddenly play really well in the last few games of the season, thus putting himself in the shop window and trying to make an impression on any scouts and managers who could be watching.
