City boss speaks to Sky Blues squad about who is and is not part of his plans next season

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley and development director Steve Waggott have completed preliminary discussions with the entire Sky Blues first team squad as part of their planning for the future.

Pressley, who has been in post two months, has drawn-up plans for his squad in the last few weeks, and has been explaining them to the players.

The manager has confirmed that talks will see a “considerable turnaround” of playing staff as he looks to craft a more manageable squad size for next season.

“Our development director Steve Waggott and I met all 34 players over the weekend to discuss our plans for the next season and beyond,” he said.

“There are players who will not be involved and it was vitally important this process was handled in the right manner. Those talks will be on-going.

“I want to produce a very hungry set of players who are tuned totally into the way we want to play our football. I want us as fit and committed as possible.

“I have now got the chance to shape the squad and the work is well under way.

“I believe that 34 players is too many for a club of this size and I want to reduce that and that is a footballing decision. However under financial fair play we still need to make decisions that will leave us room for manoeuvre when rebuilding a side that can challenge for promotion.

“We can only spend on our playing budget, 60 per cent of our turnover and, as everyone is aware, we do not currently have access to a great deal of the revenue we generate. I have to factor that into my plans.

“I also want to ensure that the players we are developing in our academy have a clear route through to the first team squad, and that is another reason why we need to be leaner and hungrier.”

Waggott added: "I'm sure supporters will be very keen to know who will and will not be figuring in Steven Pressley's plans following the discussions this weekend.

"We hope to be able to answer as soon as we practically can because yesterday was just the first step in the process and we need to sit down with agents and formalise the proceedings before we can make any official announcements."

Pressley did however confirm that James Bailey and Callum Ball will return to Derby County when their agreements lapse in June, but that he was talking to Southampton about the future of centre-half Aaron Martin.

hope the aaron martin one is a wind up

I was going to mock you for the "that's 7", but I worked out you meant players under contract to us and not on loan :p

I'd be surprised if Clarke went as he's quite versatile along the back 4. I'd expect that Jordan Stewart won't get a longer deal though and so will go. Cameron will leave, as will Elliott. Cody will probably be shipped out too.

ive not been jordan clarkes biggest fan and hes yet to change my mind

too small to be a midfielder and doesnt have the pace or vision to make up for it.

dunno how long people will make excuses for him considering hes been around for 5 odd years now!

Haha, brilliant. It's not a firesale, it's "clearing a route for the academy players". Keep an eye out for this one in the off-season, my friends.

He played a lot of youth players during his time at Falkirk...I thought the same would happen here in all honesty.

You obviously haven't been the past couple of games then

So 2 decent displays means we should keep him? What about the last 3 or 4 years? How many games has he actually played? Spends more time on the treatment table than on the pitch and mostly when he plays it's like playing with ten men anyway.

Im not his biggest fan but keep him off the treatment table and Bell will be very useful in this league. If's and buts but he has got the potential to be good at this level. The bloke has plenty of skill bud

City boss says five out-of-contract players will not be offered new deals for 2013/14
Coventry City boss Steven Pressley has confirmed that the following out-of-contract players will not be returning to the club at the end of their current deals.

Richard Wood, Stephen Elliott, Jordan Stewart, Danny Philliskirk and Nathan Cameron have all been informed that they will not be offered new contracts for the 2013/14 season.

Pressley said: "We need to refresh and re-invigorate the squad so tough decisions have to be made but I would personally like to thank all of the players for their efforts during my time here and I wish them the very best for the future."

No big surprises there, so it's still not clear what Thomas or Edjenguele were flabbergasted by.

Shame for Elliott. Closet fan of his!!

Also a shame about Bailey. Although he dipped in form towards the end, I thought he could have done a job here next season!!

It's a fair point though-and almost word for word what I said on here a few weeks ago. But then I am a noted SISU Rentboy :p

Are we all really saying that Bell should be retained? Yes; he has had a couple of good games towards the end of the season but is that not what he does to earn another season? If retained he will be back to his usual "injuries", next season. Sorry,I just think that he is a waste of space which could be better utilised by someone else.

Bell is good enough for this league.
I'd keep him

We all know that it's Sods Law that Bell will get injured in pre season and miss the majority of next season if he's still here. He's managed just 98 appearances in 4 and a half years

Shame about Danny Philliskirk, always sounded like he played well in the under 21 games.

Astonishing comment! When did you last see him play? Clearly not this season. Great player who's still on his way back to fitness.

Each season he has been here he has managed one or 2 half decent performances, but when given an extended stint, he has failed. Surely Elliott has done more to deserve a place than bell. I'm guessing the cost of ending Bell's contract isn't worth it! There are players who have done more in the past and have been let go. Sorry, but 2 half decent performances is nowhere near enough to warrant keeping him

When does Bells contract run out? I'm guessing we will keep him until it runs out. Nobody would want to buy him given his injury record.

The legacy of SISUs shit decisions and crap management appointments will cost the club money for a long time, well done to orange ken for this one though:jerkit::jerkit::jerkit:
