Why the negativity?

Why are so many down on our chances and summer transfer dealings?

Uphill battle this season, which we all knew, and in my mind nothing has changed.

There's also lots of disrespect towards those running the club and the players who have contributed significantly to putting us where we are today. I know fans are fickle, but it's embarrassing.

I'm not trying to take a holier than thou stance, but let's at least see where we are before we make up our minds.
 
I'm only guessing here, but as it stands, it could be that despite spending over a 100 million, we will still be fielding the same team as finished last season, bar possibly 3, and still look light in a few positions.
 
I second this. Some of the chat on the transfer thread is mind blowing. We've done £120m+ of transfers. I think that is more than anyone realistically expected. We HAVE had a go, after one game the task is equally monumental as it was before to stay in this league. It will require an amazing effort to even finish ahead of the likes of Bournemouth and Brentford who can casually drop £40m on one player.
The dismissal of all the promotion squad as rubbish (Rushworth and Milan joined this on Friday after one poor game) and demanding 15/20 new players is bizarre. Enjoy the season, it will be hard at times, but if the worst happens...you never know when 'WE'LL BE BACK'

You can be happy we've had a go while also being confused by the allocation of some of those funds.

£20m on a backup striker
£20m on a winger who had 3 good games all last season and isn't even an analytics darling to make up for that
£22.5m on a goalkeeper (who we love, but it's 1/5th of our outlay on the cheapest position in footbal)

It's just people playing up online.
 
Reality is a lot of the clubs that go up struggle. The gap is every increasing between the two divisions so a club that hasn't been in the top flight for 25 years has a huge job on its hands to not go back down.

Some people had got it in their heads we would have an entirely new squad which never really seemed likely to me.

Obviously the performance, or lack of, last week has rattled some people. Win at the weekend and the nerves will settle, if we lose probably best to log off for the rest of the weekend.
 
A combination of:

Unthinking entitlement;

Genuine concern that weaknesses in the squad, for whatever reason, have not been addressed;

A couple of performances that have caused a bit of introspection.

Absolutely an uphill battle, we are odds on to go down for a reason, same as the other 2 promoted sides. The financial gap between the Premier League and Championship is huge.

We've got to take each game as it comes, support the lads and turn the CBS into a cauldron of noise where teams don't look forward to coming to.

If we stay up then it's a brilliant achievement. If we go down then we become a parachute team with a very strong squad and would be favourites to bounce back up. Whatever happens, enjoy the ride. And enjoy watching Premier League football in Coventry again.

You can but equally this is where you'd surely show some faith to the same people who won the league last season despite not being a parachute side.

I remember when people said we'd wasted money on Wright, Simms, MVE, BTA.
 
I'm probably one they people would label negative, I don't have unthinking entitlement, I've been pretty clear we are one of the favourites for relegation and this season is a relegation fight, i'd say that is realism not negativity.

I am a bit concerned with our transfer policy as we have spent the best part of £90m on young players to develop, who I really hope realise their potential but it's also a lot of pressure to put on them. I'm glad we've brought in a bit of experience in Pinnock and Awoniya. It does feel like we have missed out on a lot of targets if the transfer rumours are true. I'm concerned that we don't have cover at left back or left wing or a proper 10 to compete with Rudi. These were 3 positions we were already light on last season.

I have faith in some of our players can make the step up, but the gap between the championship and the PL is massive and ever increasing. That's why most promoted teams get relegated in their first season.

I think we will do Hull tomorrow if we pick the right team.

This is a loyalty point not a footballing point and I think it’s a little naive about the gulf between Championship, even top of Championship, and the PL.

Suspect you are right- many forget though that £30m has gone on securing two of the key players that got us the promotion. We didn’t have the money to do that last season, so a fairer comparison is what’s been spent on other players if choosing to play the “new to the lineup card” On that front we must be miles behind Ipswich and Hull so no surprise if they do have more new faces.

With the exception of Rushworth, we haven't seen any of these guys play. After a handful of games 2 years back EMC was 'League 1 at best, fat and slow'. You can have an opinion of course. I personally don't see a lot in Tchoauna but hope once he beds in he can unlock something he didn't show at Burnley. I'm sure you were one of the ones horrified when Travers at Everton was rumoured to be coming in as #1 at £4m as a cheap option at GK. The coaching (Robins & Lampard) and recruitment have got us this far. Let's show a bit of SUPPORT as Supporters. If we are sat on 10 points in April I'll probably agree, but until then enjoy the ride.

People like to panic and moan and make out they could have done better (even though they have never signed a player in their lives). You can judge transfers on paper or you can wait and see how they perform over the season.

Tbf after Robins was fired 95% of this forum hated every single player pretty much.

Lol, is it balls. Everyone knows how big the gulf is. All I've said is that we should trust the people who have delivered FOOTBALLING success for us.

How would you have done it differently?
 
There seems to be a general weirdness at rhe moment because of a combination of:

Beating Arsenal at their place was never going to happen for us.

Both other promoted teams won.

Perception our transfer window isn’t great compared to others.

This is fine though, everyone wants more and will have concerns about certain positions or new players. If we lose tomorrow to Hull I'll be in a horrendous mood.

My issue is that it seems more than that, casting new signings as not good enough or backups, disrespecting existing players who have contributed a lot, and questioning the transfer strategy, or lack thereof.
 
A win tomorrow and everyone will be much happier. What we can't afford though is for Lampard to waste 4-6 weeks worth of games, dropping precious points and losing team confidence, while working out his best formation and players. It's not just about the players. He needs to be ruthless.

Onyeka, Grimes, Yirenkyi, Hamer, Torp, Rudoni are all battling for 3 positions realistically and the midfield is going to be key.

I hope he sticks with the 4-2-3-1 that the Championship squad is familiar with, for some continuity, and then get the 3-5-2 ready for matches we will struggle for possession in.

But the potential could be seen. He just wasn’t quite at the level we required at the time, so he wasn’t right for us and we were not right for him.

Is that true though?

We'll most likely have 5 or 6 new signings that are starting for us regularly, and this may go up.

In getting to the Premier League from League 2 the team has been rebuilt several times. This step in the transition to Premier League was going to be no different. The constraint is budget, yes we have spent a lot, but we are still having to pick up players on the cheaper end of the spectrum compared to established Premier League sides. It’s a balance between upgrade were we can and keeping some continuity with those we think can step up or at least contribute as a squad player.
