At times tonight we packed as many as 10 players into our 6 yard box, conceding a goal in there from a corner anyway.

I appreciate I’m the ultimate broken record on this, but can someone explain what the thinking is here? Rushworth was prevented from coming for the ball because he was swamped and we looked very uncomfortable defending the set pieces. Few times we won the ball but had no out and it came straight back in.

Space in the box benefits the attackers, is the logic.

Pack the box and make it difficult to get a run on the ball, more bodies in the way to block etc.

Also helps you reset your defensive shape easier if you cant properly clear the ball, woth everyone already back.

You know what, I agree. There’s a reason teams all over the division adopt this and can’t quite understand why.

My ‘instinct’ is that the egghead analysts have come up with models that support the following: a) 10 defenders = less conceded goals and b) low % of chances created when 1-3 attackers left upfront.

Disclamer: no data underpins this opinion.

First goal this season we have conceded from a corner by the way.

Problem also was that Mee got that near post flick on for their goal , but we went to sleep & it nearly happened again .
All teams now know how quick Milan & Tats are , so surely those 2 out , each on the half way line , would pull a minimum of 4 back & who knows , a goal from that positioning would change the opposition numbers in our box …..?

Unti tonight not conceded a goal in from set pieces we do ok

Loads of players in box = wall in front of goal!

I agree with you generally though as it makes defending the 2nd ball scary / more difficult to deal with! Then also getting out of a pressured situation becomes quite frantic as you lose that way of getting out / a forward option to pass to.

Ah I see. To me packing the box just looks like it makes it harder to defend rather than attack because your keeper is swamped and your defenders have more opponents to keep an eye on.

If you leave players up it looks to me like you’d simplify the defenders’ task and allow your keeper to take part in the defence.

It's not so much the corner itself, but that any clearance inevitably goes to an opposition player, as all yours are packed in the box, so it means they get to keep the pressure on.

There's no out ball. We saw it last night when there was a spell from corners where we couldn't get out, because we had no-one up the pitch.

The only thing I can think of is it's very difficult to find space to get shots away when the box is so crowded.

We'll need to be on it Saturday at set pieces.
Saw some hilights from Stoke last night, they've got some big units in that team.

We were defending deep free kicks differently to what we have been corners so those conceded aren’t relevant to this thread.

And even that issue, we have significantly improved on.

We have only conceded one from a corner, last night, so this thread should be reserved to when/if we start regular conceding at corners, surely?

The comment’s about how it looks not about how many goals we’ve conceded from them. You see top flight games where multiple goals are scored from corners with teams adopting the same approach.

I do get the logic re less space for attackers to move, and it’s only the first time we’ve conceded so no need to panic too much.

But I would love us to leave two up, it gives them something to worry about and we’ve seen how long and accurate Rushworths throws can be.

We also saw our players can get in each others way when it’s so tight in there ie last night.

The front post thing was doing my head in, after they scored they did it every time and it took us ages to adapt.

That makes it more odd, to have multiple pages of a thread, of how something looks when it isn’t effecting the performance though, doesn’t it?

Can't remember who it was, but a manager was asked why they do it a few years ago and apparently the number of goals conceded with all back is lower than leaving someone up. Also the number of chances created from leaving someone up is far less than the increased number of goals conceded and so although everyone thinks it helps to have someone left up, the downside far outweighs it.

You need to ask a proper professional coach about this. You would think that enough people are paid enough money to think about these things for it not to be a coincidence that everyone does it one way. But the possibility that you’ve single-handedly uncovered a flaw in professional football is a tantalising one.

I agree having everyone back for corners is a joke how is the keeper supposed to catch it and then we have no outlet I'd the ball is won.Keep 2/3 up top they will keep same back less people in the box should be easier to defend.
