Sheffield Wednesday "on the pitch" (9 Viewers)

Wonder if they will do it if they're winning? Hopefully we bag a last minute winner so they don't have time and the ref just blows

The players are one thing, but the non playing staff will need their wages much more urgently and missed payments will hit them harder.
Most of the players they have kept are not on much money either. But yes, those who work behind the scenes will be really struggling with not knowing when they will be able to pay rent/mortgages to keep a roof over their heads without everything else that needs to be paid.

No evidence they haven't paid the police, they have to be able to pay police to host matches. They've not had any matches cancelled.
I didn't say they haven't paid for the police. What I said is it won't be easy to cover the whole perimeter of the ground. It would take a lot more manpower than normal to have a chance of stopping them going onto the pitch. Police officers are a very limited resource these days. Extra security with stewards to cover it? Then once they start getting onto the pitch their role then becomes trying to remove those on the pitch making it easier for the rest to get on.

Not many people see them having a chance of staying up so it may not make much difference. Live in front of the Sky cameras could be too tempting whatever happens in the game.

I know its the responsibility of the owner and the business itself to pay their staff but given how much money is in the game and how often this situation occurs can the FA & EFL not have a fund that ensures non-playing staff get paid, or at least a no interest loan against outstanding wages, in situations like this.

So long as we don't join the protest on the pitch, we should get awarded the points.

If both sets of fans take part it will probably be replayed behind closed doors.
Reading did it last season and the game was replayed. I don’t see any chance of us getting a free 3 points.

They have the capability but they didn't give Bury much help. They set the rules and expect clubs to keep to them.

You have to fear for the future of Sheffield Wednesday. We don't know what debt has been secured on the ground or how much debt they are in themselves. They haven't been able to pay the wages on time such a short time after taking in the season ticket money. What the FL sees as the most serious is the transfer fees owed to other clubs that hasn't been paid. Their transfer embargoes already stretch to 2027 without the latest adding to them.

The issue with transfer embargoes is as they said on Talkshite this morning, that it actually plays into the owners hands as he doesn't want to spend any money. Really difficult situation.

I'm sure the only person Holding the club together at this point is Barry Bannan
It is a farce to be honest - Been highly critical of them since the Palmer incident, sometimes justifiably so but what is happening isn't right and I take no joy or satisfaction in seeing the office ladies, people in the club shop etc. not being paid on time and I would say that about any employee of any football club in the country

I think it depends entirely on the situation. 10mins played and 0-0. 100% will be replayed. 80 mins gone and were 4-0 up? Might be a different story.

Some fans are very silly.
Away players much more likely to be targeted for any "silliness" than home players.
no, even they aren't stupid enough to do that

attack an away player and it becomes about that and not what they want to highlight

There's been a few instances over the last few years of someone going onto the pitch during the game to attack a player. That's one person by themself being watched by everyone else and they know they will be caught. What's to say there's not a few idiots that would take the chance if lots go on the pitch at the same time.

I'm really getting concerned for the safety of our players.

Genuinely feel awful for the players and non playing staff.

A lot behind the scenes seemed to think he would have sold by now but seems to be dragging his feet.

Just crap and generally wonder when the EFL will grow a backbone.

if anyone remebers "the secret footballer" aka David Kitson i think he wrote that whilst at portsmouth he was offered his wages if he encouraged other players to play and not refuse, which he then did. he got his money but other players did not. no doubt there will be some murky goings on this time too....really is terrible for those affected

Starting to sound like the game won't even go ahead. Players are threatening to strike from tomorrow and mass staff walkout planned if they are not paid today.

Had a look at their message board and their fans seem as divided about protesting on the pitch as ours were for the Sheff U game back in the day. I remember Nick and a few others being vehemently opposed to the protest action taken at the time! While it might be easy enough to get on the pitch, most of those supportive of protesting are unlikely to want a fine or ban that might go with it, so I will be surprised if it got to the stage of having to call the game off.

Clubs that have been in the PL in recent years have significantly more followers than us so clearly they are not just followed by their own fans.

Example:

Southampton 1.5M
Coventry 205K

Similar size cities, one club, almost identical average attendance.

Southampton do not have 7.5 times more fans than us.
Well by your own logic, Wednesday haven't recently been in the PL. In fact, they've recently been in L1, which would mean even less followers from outside the city/fanbase? So the fact they've still got nearly 400k followers having not collected the PL following says it all. They theoretically, in a city as big as Sheffield, can hold a lot more woodwork supporters.

Take us for example. I've sat in crowds of 5-6k at the ricoh in a season that we took nearly 50k to Wembley! Suggesting our average gate that season of about 10k is our entire fanbase is ludicrous. Id say we've got a pull of 80k maximum fans is maybe about right? And by "fans" I dont just mean ST holders or people that regularly attend. I mean people who say they support coventry. Even if they support another team for glory or only watch us on the tele (thats 95% of Man Utd fanbase, armchair supporters, doesn't mean they dont have those supporters though). Would you agree thats about right? 80k? If we can pull 47k for a day at Wembley, then there's easily another 30k at home that day watching, that would say theyre not football fans, but if forced, would say they support Coventry (my parents, missus, daughter, mother-in-law, all fit this catagory). Is that a fair assessment?

So if we could draw 80k total fans in a city with a population of 300k, then why is it so unbelievable to suggest Wednesday could draw 150k in a city of nearly 800k population? Like i said, 150k is only 20% of the cities population. 80k is 27% of 300k.

Looks like the Sheffield fans are organising an on the pitch protest when we play them due to it being on Sky. (looks like its only on sky+)

As a club who has been through it all with owners. I have sympathy. If the EFL can give us the 3 points mind you that would be great.

Reading also did this against us in 21/22 (it was a bit half cocked tbh)

i imagine if the players strike the EFL will make them play the youth team like Bolton did against us in League 1 (and we know how that went!!)

Yep-the most one sided game I’ve seen in recent times and some how it ended 0-0!
